Sanford Health has made a strong commitment to studying, preventing and curing type 1 diabetes (T1D) and The Summit League is proud to assist Sanford Health with this mission. Each of our ten member institutions will choose one men's and one women's basketball game during the month of January to raise awareness about T1D and how fans can assist with the efforts of potentially ending this disease.

What is T1D?

T1D is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks its own body – making antibodies that destroy the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, which the body uses to turn food into energy. Without insulin, blood sugars increase over time to a dangerous, life-threatening level if left untreated. Though there is currently no cure, people with T1D can stay healthy and control their blood sugar levels with lifelong insulin shots.

Who is affected by T1D?

Currently, there are 1.25 million Americans battling type 1 diabetes. While the condition occurs at every age and in every race, most of those diagnosed are children. More than 70,000 children under the age of 14 are newly diagnosed with this life-changing condition each year.

What is the Sanford PLEDGE Study?
The Sanford PLEDGE study is a large-scale screening of children for T1D. Through PLEDGE, Sanford Health hopes to find better ways to identify which children may be at risk of developing T1D. Early detection and ongoing monitoring means kids could start treatment early enough to prevent serious illness. Over 4,500 patients have been enrolled in the PLEDGE study.
