ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League selected South Dakota State men's basketball player Mike Daum (Kimball, Neb.) as the Male Athlete of the Month and South Dakota women's basketball player Allison Arens (Crofton, Neb.) as the Female Athlete of the Month for December.
Daum collectes his first career Athlete of the Month honor after making the game winning shot over South Dakota. He averaged 25.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during the month while shooting 53.6 percent from the field, 40 percent from behind the three-point line and 92.4 percent from the free throw line. The sophomore set a career-high in scoring in back-to-back games with 33 points against Idaho (Dec. 10) and 39 points against Murray State (Dec. 17). He also had a double-double (29 points,11 rebounds) and broke a school record with 16 made free throws in the win over Murray State. During the month, Daum reached the 20-point mark in seven-of-eight games.
Arens also earns her first career Athlete of the Month award after guiding South Dakota to a 7-1 December record. Arens averaged 20.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game during the month while shooting 51 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line. The sophomore scored a career high 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field against Northern Illinois (Dec. 19). She also had her first career double-double (28 points,11 rebounds) in win over Denver (Dec. 28). Arens also broke a 35-year school record and tied the league record with 18 made free throws vs. DU. During the month, Arens reached the 20-point mark in four of eight games.
