Get to Know a Coach is a summer feature profiling Summit League head coaches with a Q&A. These coaches provide a glimpse into their personal life away from their sport.
In this week's installment, South Dakota State's head women's volleyball coach Nicole Cirillo is profiled.
Name: Nicole Cirillo
School: South Dakota State
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Alma Mater: Central Arkansas '04
Seasons (Overall // School): 4th // 4th
If you were not a coach, what job would you be doing? Anything that requires me not to dress up daily.
What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives? Travel abroad.
What fad/trend do you hope makes a comeback? I can tell you that I LOVE the ankle showing trend as I've always had a hard time finding pants that were long enough. So now, I can just buy regular pants and because they are shorter on me. I'm now trendy!
Why did you decide to become a coach? Share my passion for volleyball and the life lessons that can be taught/learned through sport. And I get to wear sweats!
What is something you will NEVER do again? I went to China and took a flight between Shanghai and Beijing. It was the worst flight I've ever been on, and was 99 percent sure I wasn't making it to my destination alive.
What are some of the events in your life that made you who you are today? I needed to be independent from a young age so that has made me who I am today. Because of this I sometimes try to take on too much myself instead of asking for help. I'm getting better about it though.
Who is your favorite professional sports team and/or athlete? St Louis Cardinals. I'm from just outside of St. Louis and I grew up going to Busch Stadium!
What is/was your favorite article of clothing that you have ever owned? Comfy clothes. Sweats, t-shirts, etc.
What is the best and worst piece of advice you have ever received? Best and what I use a lot with my kids and team is if you're going to do something, then do it to the best of your ability.
What is the weirdest food you have ever eaten? I'm not adventurous when it comes to food. Calamari would probably be the weirdest, but not the ones where you can see the tentacles!
What mythical creature do you wish actually existed? I would go with Mermaids. I'm a certified scuba diver so I like to spend my time in the ocean too!
What is your favorite movie/TV show? I have three boys at home, so I don't get to watch a lot of what I want to watch unless its sports.
What was the best thing to happen to you this year? I bought my husband a smoker so he can make me more good food!
What is/was your favorite vacation destination? I don't have a favorite. I enjoy all of my travels and like to mix it up.
What is your biggest superstition? I never step on a drain in the shower or the metal grates on sidewalks. I've avoided them for so long I don't even realize that I do it anymore.
What kind of music do you listen to most frequently? I listen to 90's, 2000 and today's hits channels on Pandora and XM.
If you could add one Summit League athlete to your team, who would you choose? So many good ones. I would say Kaitlyn Hickey from IUPUI (graduated two years ago). She wasn't the biggest or hardest attacker, but played the game at such a high level. She just knew how to make everyone around her better.
What is your one "go to" stop (dining, entertainment, other) on any Summit road trip? In Macomb, we go to the Sunrise Family Restaurant. Good breakfast place, friendly service, and not a lot of other options.
What phrase/quote do you most frequently use to inspire your team? HAVE FUN!!
What is your biggest pet peeve? When people aren't appreciative.
