ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple announced today the hiring of David Brauer as Director of Media Relations.
Brauer joins The Summit League from Northern Illinois University where he was the Associate Director of Media Relations. While at NIU, he played an integral role in publicizing and promoting Huskie athletics as the baseball and football contact for three seasons. With baseball, Brauer achieved unprecedented national media coverage for the program, coordinated media operations for NIU's 2008 game at U.S. Cellular Field, and served as color analyst on radio broadcasts. Brauer's football assignments included developing award candidate websites, managing the production of the media guide, and coordinating press box operations. He also began a student assistant work program and hired, trained, and managed a 12-person undergraduate staff.
Prior to his time at NIU, Brauer worked in sports business, including a position assisting Bryan Harlan at Harlan Sports Management in Chicago, a firm that represents college and professional football coaches and broadcasters.
Brauer was an Assistant Sports Information Director at the University of South Carolina where he worked with three sports, including a role as the assistant football contact, managed the school's athletics website, and oversaw three student assistants who went on to full-time positions at Division I institutions. Prior to his time in Columbia, Brauer spent one year as a Sports Information Assistant at Purdue University and coordinated publicity for three sports, including baseball, and assisted with men's basketball and football.
To begin his professional career, Brauer was the Publicity/Media Relations Intern for the Cleveland Browns and assisted in a full-time capacity with the team's day-to-day publicity efforts from June 2000 through May 2001 under the direction of Todd Stewart.
A native of Tolono, Ill., Brauer is a 2000 graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management. While an undergraduate at Illinois, Brauer spent three years as a student assistant in the Athletic Public Relations department and worked primarily with Fighting Illini football, men's basketball and men's tennis teams. In 1998, Brauer was a media relations intern for the Buffalo Bills during the team's summer training camp in Fredonia, N.Y.
Brauer and his wife, Kendra, have one son, Nicolas, born Aug. 8, 2008, and reside in Sycamore, Ill.
