ELMHURST, Ill. The Summit League will designate 20 "Food Fight" games during the basketball season as part of a league-wide food drive initiative tied in with Students Team Up To Fight Hunger (STUFH).
A total of 10 men's games and 10 women's games have been selected with each school having exactly one week to collect food and/or cash donations and two weeks if the date features both a men's and women's basketball game. At the end of the Food Fight schedule, the school that raises the most amount of food (measured in pounds) will be deemed the winner and will receive The Summit League Food Fight trophy.
"This is a great effort by our league's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for a worthy endeavor," said Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple. "I am very happy to see student-athletes at all of member institutions come together to provide this type of community service initiative."
The Food Fight scheduled begins Dec. 4 in Fargo, N.D., when the North Dakota State men's team hosts Oral Roberts. The first featured women's game is Dec. 6 when UMKC hosts IPFW.
"It is wonderful to see each university in The Summit League show that they care about their communities," said Daniel Kahn, president of Students Team Up to Fight Hunger. "Every food bank tells me that demand is up and donations down during these times of economic uncertainty, so every bit of food helps tremendously. The food fights held by these institutions will make a real difference."
