OU Leads Commissioner's Cup Standings After Fall Season

ELMHURST, Ill. - With the fall season of the 2008-09 academic year in the books, Oakland has taken the early lead in the race for The Summit League Commissioner's Cup with 33.0 points, while South Dakota State is second with 29.0 points in the race for the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All Sports Award, Oakland holds the top spot, while in the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All Sports Award, SDSU is in first place.

South Dakota State, Oral Roberts, IUPUI and North Dakota State all trail each other by one point for second through fifth place in the Commissioner's Cup Standings. Southern Utah, Western Illinois and IPFW each collected at least 20.0 points as well. UMKC and Centenary round out the standings.

Oakland finished in the top two in three of the five Summit League Championship sports contested during the fall, including a team championship in both men's and women's soccer. The Jackrabbits finished in the top five in four of the five fall sports.

South Dakota State sits atop the women's standings and in second place in the Commissioner's Cup rankings thanks to finishing first in first in women's cross country and women's soccer and fifth in both men's cross country and volleyball.

Oral Roberts ranks third in the Commissioner's Cup standings after finishing second in the volleyball standings and third in men's cross country. IUPUI is fourth in the Commissioner's Cup standings after claiming the women's soccer championship and placing third in men's soccer, while North Dakota State is in fifth place after taking the volleyball title.

The Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports. The men's award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women's award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's athletic program from 1994-2001.
