ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League has selected South Dakota State men’s cross country runner Michael Krsnak (Rapid City, S.D.) and women’s soccer player Diana Potterveld (Collins, Colo.) as the Male and Female Athletes of the Month for October.
Krsnak garners the Male Athlete of the Month honor after being crowned the 2012 Men’s Cross Country Champion and leading his team to its third team title in four years. The senior won the 8k league race with a time of 25:06.4, four seconds ahead of the runner-up, and was named the Championship MVP. Earlier in the month, he posted a ninth-place finish at the Chile Pepper Invite with a 10k time of 30:37.7. He was one-of-two runners not from a BCS Conference school to finish in the top 10.
Potterveld captures the Female Athlete of the Month award after tallying three game-winning goals and a hat trick in the Jackrabbits’ final three games. The freshman became the first Jackrabbit in program history to score three-straight game-winning goals in victories over Kansas City (Oct. 19), South Dakota (Oct. 21) and Omaha (Oct. 26). Her 10-points in the three-game span mark the most for an SDSU player since 2003, which helped her tally 12 of her 19 points on season in the final five regular season games. She was named Offensive Player of the Week after recording the first SDSU hat-trick since 2004 in a 6-1 win over Omaha. The forward was named The Summit League Freshman of the Year, the first Jackrabbit in program history to receive the honor, and to the All-League first team and All-Freshmen team. For the month, Potterveld recorded 14 points on six goals and two assists and had 13 shots on goal.
