Each month, The Summit League will feature outstanding student-athlete performances from a selected institution as recognized by its Faculty Athletic Representative. The October installment of The Summit League Scholar-Athlete Spotlight features three student-athletes from IUPUI.
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Cincinnati, Ohio
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Elizabeth Bourgeois has emerged as one of IUPUI's top performers in the swimming program's history, both in the classroom and in the water. The Cincinnati, Ohio native has maintained a 3.72 grade-point average while majoring in mechanical engineering. As a junior, she set two individual school records and was a part of four relay school records. Bourgeois set the school record in the 50 freestyle (23.68) at the 2012 Summit League Championships, earning All-League honors, and also holds the 100 free school record set in the prelims. She is a two-time Summit League Academic All-League Distinguished Scholar and has been on IUPUI's Academic Advisor's List every semester of her career. Bourgeois earned the IUPUI Michael A. Carroll Scholarship prior to her senior season, based on her academic prowess and a commitment to community service.
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Fort Wayne, Ind.
Rebecca Downs enters her fourth year at IUPUI and ranks among the department's top students with a 3.95 GPA. She earned the women's cross country team's Leadership Award as a junior and was the team's No. 2 runner for much of 2011. Downs was later ranked among IUPUI's Top 100 students during the spring semester and was the program's best 10,000m runner on the track. She has been on IUPUI's Academic Advisor's List every semester of her college career and is a two-time Academic All-Summit League Distinguished Scholar honoree. Downs has started her senior year on a high note, running back-to-back personal record times in cross country as the Jaguars' top finisher in the season's first two meets. Her time of 18:32.5 at the Indiana Intercollegiates helped IUPUI to its best-ever finish at that meet and was the 14th-fastest 5K in school history. Downs’ 14th-place finish was IUPUI's highest-ever at the Intercollegiates Meet.
Rob van de Vin, Men’s Golf
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Jr./Den Bosch, Netherlands
Major: General Studies
Rob van de Vin made an immediate impact on the IUPUI men's golf program after joining the squad at midseason in 2011-12. The Netherlands native earned All-Summit League First Team honors and finished the year with a 74.95 scoring average. He played in the Jaguars' lineup five times including at The Summit League Championships and NCAA Norman Regional. van de Vin helped IUPUI claim its first Summit League title since 2006, firing a season-best 219 (70-74-75) at the Primm Valley Golf Club. The Jaguars knocked off Southern Utah in a one-hole playoff as van de Vin made par on the par-4 18th hole to help set the tone. In the classroom, van de Vin has a 3.93 grade-point average while majoring in general studies in the IUPUI School of Continuing Studies.
