SDSU's Reichow, DU's Hamilton Named Athletes of the Month

August/September Athletes of the Month Release

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League has selected South Dakota State men’s cross country athlete Joel Reichow (White Bear Lake, Minn.) as the Male Athlete of the Month and Denver women’s soccer player Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) as the Female Athlete of the Month for August/September.

Reichow earns his first career Athlete of the Month honor after recording a pair of top-two finishes during the month. The sophomore from White Bear Lake, Minn., captured the Bison Open individual title as South Dakota State also claimed the team title at the event. His time of 15:46.38 is the fastest 5k time in the league this season. He placed second at the Oz Memorial with a 6k time of 19:19.5, which ranks second in The Summit League, as the Jackrabbits placed second as a team. At Minnesota’s Roy Griak Invitational, he recorded the fourth-best 8k league time of 25:29.7. Reichow earned back-to-back Summit League Athlete of the Week honors and leads a South Dakota State team that is ranked No. 10 in the Midwest.

Hamilton captures her first career Athlete of the Month award after leading No. 17 Denver to a 9-1-1 record last month to start the season. The Pioneers got off to an impressive 7-0-0 start with wins over Colorado College and UT-Martin, both 2012 NCAA Tournament participants, along with Alabama and Colorado. Hamilton had a goal against the Crimson Tide and scored a pair of goals and recorded an assists in the 3-0 shutout over the Buffaloes. On Sept. 26, the senior assisted on the lone goal in a 1-0 win at then No. 17 BYU. A two-time Summit League Offensive Player of the week recipient, Hamilton broke DU’s all-time points and goals records in a 2-1 loss at Nebraska on Sept. 22. She currently has 120 career points and 45 career goals. Hamilton, named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List, had a point in all but three matches last month as Denver has been nationally-ranked all season.
