South Dakota State Claims Fourth Consecutive Commissioner’s Cup

ELMHURST, Ill. - South Dakota State won its fourth consecutive Summit League Commissioner’s Cup following the conclusion of the 2015-16 academic year. The Jackrabbits totaled 98.5 points en route to their fifth overall title in six years while also capturing the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award for the fourth straight season with 40.5 points. South Dakota earned its first-ever Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award with 59.5 points.

North Dakota State placed second with 79.5 points followed closely by South Dakota with 75.5 and Oral Roberts with 71.5. IUPUI came in fifth with a total of 67.5 points, while Omaha was just one point behind the Jaguars with 66.5 points. Denver (62 points), Western Illinois (42 points) and Fort Wayne (41 points) rounded out the poll. 

South Dakota State took home league titles in men’s basketball and men’s golf. The Jackrabbits, who participate in 18 league-sponsored sports, had nine runner-up finishes and placed in the top-three 14 times.

North Dakota State won a league-best six titles guiding it to a second-place finish. The Bison took home crowns in women’s soccer, softball and both men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field. South Dakota, who came in third place overall, won the women’s cross country title and the women’s basketball regular season crown. 

The Commissioner’s Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men’s and women’s athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men’s sports and women’s sports. The men’s award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women’s award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU’s athletic program from 1994-2001.
