WEEKLY NOTEBOOK: VOL. 5 (Mar. 14)

AROUND THE SUMMIT LEAGUE...

• All six Summit members are slated to get league play underway this weekend. Mother Nature has already forced two shifts to that schedule as North Dakota State and Omaha are scheduled to play a single game on Saturday to be followed by a Sunday doubleheader. Western Illinois and South Dakota State will play a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday.
• The Mavericks will take some momentum into league action after picking up a 4-game sweep at Santa Clara. Omaha's pitching staff blanked the Broncos 2-0 in the opening two games behind scoreless starts from Joey Machado (6 IP, 13 K's) and Payton Kinney (8 IP, 7 K's).
• Machado was named the league's co-pitcher of the week after his career-best strikeout performance.
• Mavericks' reliever Tyler Daugherty picked up a pair of saves in the series and leads the league with four.
• The Bison stayed idle last week after having their series at Mississippi Valley State canceled due to poor field conditions and forecasted inclement weather. NDSU's last game action was an 11-5 win over Northern Colorado on March 1. Catcher Jack Simonsen continues to lead The Summit in batting at .400 entering league play.
• Oral Roberts will look to snap a five-game skid as the Golden Eagles open league play at home against Purdue Fort Wayne. First baseman Spencer Henson continues to swing a hot stick for ORU with league bests in home runs (5) and RBI (16). His .375 batting average is second among league players.
• Left fielder Garrett Mohler led the Mastodons at the plate last week, going 5-for-16 (.313) in four games with two RBI.
• South Dakota State travels to Western Illinois and hopes shortstop Gus Steiger stays hot at the plate. The sophomore leads the league with 23 hits and seven stolen bases and was named the player of the week after going 11-for-27 (.407) in five games. He also led the league with six RBI last week.
• Western Illinois righthander Javin Drake shared the pitcher of the week honor with Omaha's Machado after cutting down 10 Billikens in a 3-0 win over Saint Louis. The Leathernecks picked up their second series win of non-conference play and look to build on that momentum with the Jackrabbits headed to Macomb.
