WEEKLY NOTEBOOK: Vol. 12 (May 2)

AROUND THE SUMMIT LEAGUE

• The Summit League standings are tightening up a bit after last weekend's action that saw South Dakota State take two of three from league-leading Omaha and Oral Roberts sweep a series at Purdue Fort Wayne.
• Those victories by the Jackrabbits and Golden Eagles pulled them even at 13-8 in league play and that duo sits in a tie for second place and four games behind Omaha, who is 5-4 against league foes in its last nine after starting the year 12-0.
• North Dakota State and Western Illinois are tied for fourth after the Bison took two of three from the Leathernecks last weekend. Those two teams are 10-11 in Summit League play and will seek some separation this week in order to guarantee one of the four spots in The Summit League Championship.
• The Leathernecks will look to do that against an Oral Roberts squad in Tulsa this weekend while NDSU plays host to the league-leading Mavericks. WIU became the first team in league history to sweep the Golden Eagles earlier this season in Macomb (April 5-7) while the Mavericks opened league play with a sweep of the Bison (Mar. 16-17).
• Oral Roberts took over the top spot in team batting average after hitting .416 in a series sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne. Reigning Triple Crown winner Spencer Henson is pacing those efforts with a .357 batting average, which is second among league batters. Henson is threatening to repeat his Triple Crown-winning efforts this season as he leads the league in homers with 11 and is tied for the league lead in RBI (37).
• Henson only trails Omaha's Parker Smejkal, who carries a .360 clip into the weekend after going 2-for-4 against Creighton in mid-week action.
• Henson's teammate, Riley Keizor, did most of the damage against the Mastodons, plating 11 runs in the series. The Golden Eagles' catcher went 7-for-13 and also scored five runs and homered en route to earning Player of the Week honors.
• South Dakota State took a pivotal series win over Omaha thanks to a 6-4 win in 13 innings in the rubber match.
• Shortstop Gus Steiger would drive in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI single in the final frame. Steiger is batting .323 in league action and his 55 hits and 14 stolen bases are both tops among SL players.
• Freshman Nic McCay earned his second Pitcher of the Week honor of the campaign after limiting the Mavs to a single hit in seven innings of shutout work in game two.
• North Dakota State's Max Loven turned in another gem in the middle game of the WIU series as the Bison would go onto to win the final two games to take the series from the Leathernecks. The lefthander registered his second complete game of the season, allowing an earned run on five hits in the 7-1 victory. His 2.60 ERA is second in the league.
• Jack Simenson was the catalyst at the plate in the two victories over WIU, going 7-for-9 with three RBI. He leads the team with a .336 batting average and 26 RBI.
