North Dakota State's Braun Named Player of the Year

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - North Dakota State’s Taylor Braun was selected as The Summit League Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s eight head coaches, sports information directors and select media members. The league’s five individual awards were spread among four different teams.

Newcomer of the Year honors went to Western Illinois’ Garret Covington, Defensive Player of the Year to Denver’s Chris Udofia and Sixth Man of the Year to Fort Wayne’s Mo Evans. North Dakota State’s Saul Phillips was named Coach of the Year.

Braun, NDSU’s first Player of the Year selection since 2009 (Ben Woodside), leads The Summit League in scoring (18.0 ppg) and ranks among the top five in points per game (1st at 17.1), assists (3rd at 56) and rebounds per game (4th at 6.6) in league play. During the season, Braun collected five league Player of the Week awards, tying for the third-highest total on record. He posted four of the league’s eight 30-point games and one of its two 10-assist games during the season. Braun posted the highest individual scoring performance (31 points at Omaha) in league play this season.

Covington led all Summit League newcomers in scoring and ranked seventh overall with 14.6 points per game. His 16.1 scoring average in league play ranked fourth. Covington converted a league-high 67 three-pointers this season, including 41 in league games.

Udofia led The Summit League with 69 blocked shots, 31 of which came in league games. He ranked fourth in steals with 44 while his 23 in league games was third-highest. Overall, Udofia ranked among the league’s top 10 in nine different categories.

Evans is Fort Wayne’s first individual honoree since 2009 (Deilvez Yearby as Sixth Man). He ranked fourth on his team with 9.6 points per game in 31 appearances off the bench. His 44.2 three-point field goal percentage ranks second in the league while his 53 three-pointers are sixth and 38 steals place seventh.

Phillips earned his second Summit League Coach of the Year award (also in 2009) after guiding North Dakota State to its first Summit League regular season championship.  The Bison enter The Summit League Tournament with a .793 winning percentage, which would rank as the eight-highest overall mark in league history. Phillips’ squad is first or second in The Summit League in six separate categories and leads the NCAA with a 50.9 field goal percentage.

Joining Braun and Udofia as first team All-Summit selections are North Dakota State’s Marshall Bjorklund, the NCAA leader in field goal percentage (63.9), South Dakota State’s Jordan Dykstra, the league’s rebounding leader (7.7 rpg) and second-leading scorer (16.4 ppg). Fort Wayne’s Luis Jacobo, the league’s No. 5 scoring leader (15.9 ppg in league contests), and Denver’s Brett Olson, who leads the league in free throw percentage (91.5%) and ranks second in three-point percentage (51.5 in league games), round out the first team.

Covington leads the second team, along with the South Dakota State duo of Brayden Carlson and Cody Larson, Fort Wayne’s Steve Forbes and North Dakota State’s TrayVonn Wright. Honorable mention includes a pair of players from both South Dakota (Brandon Bos and Trevor Gruis) and Omaha (CJ Carter and John Karhoff) and one from North Dakota State (Lawrence Alexander).

The Summit League’s All-Newcomer team features Covington, Evans, Forbes, Larson and IUPUI’s Khufu Najee.

The Summit League Tournament begins Saturday, March 8, at the Sioux Falls Arena in Sioux Falls, S.D., and will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports and regionally on Midco Sports Network. Seven teams will vie for the NCAA Tournament automatic bid, which goes to the winner of the championship game on Tuesday, March 11, on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. (CT).
