ELMHURST, Ill. – Five Summit League men's basketball players were selected to the 2017-18 Summit League Academic All-League Team as voted by the league's faculty athletic representatives and sports information directors. Student-athletes were chosen for the honor based on their academic and athletic performances this season.
The quintet is headlined by North Dakota State's A.J. Jacobson, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection. Joining Jacobson are teammate Paul Miller, Oral Roberts' Albert Owens, Denver's Jake Pemberton and South Dakota State's Reed Tellinghuisen.
Jacobson has a 3.99 grade-point average (GPA) majoring in zoology and working on his MBA. The Senior CLASS Award finalist finished the year ranked third in The Summit League in three-point field goal percentage at 45.2 percent (56-of-124). He started all 32 Bison games this season and averaged 9.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
A third team Academic All-America honoree in 2016, Miller is an accounting major with a 3.38 GPA. He finished third in the league in scoring (19.5 ppg) and fourth in assists (3.4 apg), while being named to the All-Summit First Team. The senior had a stretch of nine consecutive games with 20-plus points and became just the sixth NDSU player to record at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists in his career.
Owens is making his second straight appearance on the Academic All-League Team after ranking third in the league for blocks (49) and averaging 11.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. The Summit League's Sixth Man of the Year and a Senior CLASS Award candidate grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against East Tennessee State and recorded his first career double-double (33 points, 10 rebounds) against Oakland this season.
Pemberton owns a 3.51 GPA and is majoring in criminology and journalism. The senior guard averaged 11.1 points and dished out 2.8 assists per game this season. He knocked down 47.2 percent (119-of-252) of his shots, including 45.2 percent (56-of-124) from three-point range.
Tellinghuisen, an honorable mention all-league selection, finished the year with 12.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The senior has a 3.45 GPA in exercise science and finished his career as SDSU's all-time leader in three-pointers made (256), three-point attempts (684), games played (139) and games started (127).
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of his team's competitions.
