SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Omaha guard J.T. Gibson captured the first #SummitMBB Player of the Week award of his career, league officials announced Monday. The senior averaged 19.5 ppg in two contests, including an 18-point effort in comeback-win over Washington State.
Gibson scored those points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, helping the Mavericks erase a 15-point, second-half deficit to the Cougars. The victory over Washington State marked the first win for a Summit League squad over a Power-5 team since 2017-18 when Purdue Fort Wayne beat Indiana for the second-consecutive season. It was also the league's first win over a Pac-12 opponent since South Dakota State defeated Washington in December of 2011.
In a loss at Dayton earlier in the week, he led the Mavericks with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. He added three assists and a season-high three steals against the Flyers.
For the week, Gibson made 60 percent from the field (15-for-25), including a 4-for-7 effort from beyond the arc. His long-distance makes moved him into fifth place on Omaha's top 10 list for career 3-pointers made.
