SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Purdue Fort Wayne's Paige Bird and Denver's Cal McCoy captured the latest #SummitGF Athlete of the Week accolades in an announcement by league officials Wednesday.
For the second straight year, Bird claimed the weekly accolade following the same event after leading the Mastodons with a 1-1-1 record at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge. She helped Purdue Fort Wayne defeat Western Illinois, 3-2, on Monday by winning her match 4&3.
She also salvaged a tie in her match against Ohio by rallying on the final hole to square things up and her only loss of the event was by a single hole against Eastern Michigan's Julia Stevenson who went undefeated during the competition.
For McCoy, the weekly honor is the first of his career. He paced the Pioneers at their spring-opening event where the freshman opened the Arizona Intercollegiate with a 69 (-2) and finished the 54-hole event at even par which was three shots clear of his closest teammate.
