Men’s Soccer lands Five on United Soccer Coaches All-West Region team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Five Summit League student-athletes from two-member schools earn United Soccer Coaches All-West Region honors as announced by the organization on Wednesday. Denver's Andre Shinyashiki and Scott DeVoss earn first team honors while Jacob Stensson earned second team honors. Denver's Kenny Akamatsu is joined by Oral Roberts' Dante Brigida on the third team.

Shinyashiki, a three-time First Team All-Summit League performer and two-time Summit League Player of the Year, earned his second straight First Team All-West Region honor. The Denver captain had a historic season for the Pioneers, leading the country in multiple categories including goals scored (28), total points (60) and game-winning goals (11). Shinyashiki also broke numerous Summit League single-season records including goals, goals per game (1.33), game-winning goals, total points and points per game (2.86). His career numbers are equally impressive as he ends his collegiate career tied for the most career goals (51) and most points (117) in Summit League history.

DeVoss, a two-time Summit League Defensive Player of the Year and two-time First Team All-Summit League performer, earned his first career First Team All-West Region honor. DeVoss, a Denver captain, helped anchor one of the nation's top defenses that allowed just 0.725 goals against on the year. The senior started in all 21 matches for the Pioneers and scored one goal. He was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week once in 2018 and twice in his career.

Stensson, a two-time First Team All-Summit League member, earned his first career Second Team All-West Region honor. The sophomore started and played in 20 matches in the midfield for Denver. Stensson totaled eight assists and eight points on the season including a three-assist game against Oral Roberts.

Akamatsu, a 2018 Second Team All-Summit League performer, earned his first career Third Team All-West Region honor. The senior started and played in 18 matches for the Pioneers this season as he helped Denver secure their fifth Summit League Tournament Championship in the last six years. Akamatsu scored four goals, including the game-winning goal in the Summit League Championship match against Omaha, and added eight assists for a total of 33 points on the year.

Brigida, a 2018 Second Team All-Summit League member, earned his first career Third Team All-West Region honor. The sophomore played in 12 matches and started 10 while scoring six goals and tallying one assist for a total of 13 points. Against Gonzaga on Sept. 13, Brigida recorded his first career hat trick while also earning the game-winning goal in the contest.
