ELMHURST, Ill. – Kansas City's men's and women's teams are the favorites to claim the 2013 Summit League Tennis Championships according to a preseason poll of league head coaches. The Kangaroo men seek their third consecutive Summit League Men's Tournament Championship while UMKC's women aim for their first title.

The Kansas City sweep marks the first time since 2009 that the same school was picked as both the men's and women's tennis favorite.

In the men's poll, Kansas City received four of five first-place votes for a total of 24 points. IUPUI, which received the remaining first-place vote, finished second with 21 points. Fort Wayne (16) and Western Illinois (12) finished third and fourth while South Dakota State (11) and league newcomer Omaha (5) rounded out the poll.

The Kangaroos return three all-league performers from a year ago led by Newcomer of the Year Tomas Patino along with Abdulrahman Alawadhi and Grant Fleming.

IUPUI brings back two players, Joel Modesitt and Deon Shafer, who earned All-Summit accolades last season. Additional all-league honorees who return for 2013 include Western Illinois' Patrick Hammers, Fort Wayne's Joao Freitas and Martin Muadi, and South Dakota State's James Thorp.

In the women's poll, Kansas City garnered five of seven first-place votes to total 46 points, edging out Fort Wayne's 44 points and two first-place votes. South Dakota (32) finished third and IUPUI (28), which had the remaining first-place vote, was fourth. Oakland (24) edged South Dakota State (23) for sixth with newcomer Omaha (17) and Western Illinois (10) finishing the final two spots.

The Kangaroos return a pair of All-Summit League selections in Laura Bouet and Maddie Schulte. Fort Wayne's Anita Henestrosa, the 2012 Newcomer of the Year, is the lone additional returnee who claimed all-league honors a year ago.

The 2013 Summit League schedule begins Feb. 3 when Western Illinois plays at Omaha. Women's league play begins March 14 in Kansas City with the first of three cluster weekends. The Summit League Tennis Championships will be hosted by Fort Wayne, April 26-27.
