Coaches tab Pioneers as Summit League Men’s Tennis Favorite

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Defending Summit League regular season men's tennis champion Denver is favored to take home the regular season title according to the preseason poll of league head coaches. The Pioneers looking to take home their sixth regular season title in seven years.

DU totaled 35 points and received five of the seven possible first-place votes. Not far behind was defending league tournament champion Drake, who claimed the No. 2 spot with a total of 30 points and one first-place vote.

Omaha picked up the final first-place vote and 22 points to tie for third place with Valparaiso. Illinois State (14) took the No. 5 spot as Oral Roberts (11) and North Dakota (11) tied for the No. 6 spot to round out the poll.

MEN'S TENNIS PRESEASON ATHLETES TO WATCH LIST

Matt Summers | Denver | Junior

  • Named to the 2018-19 All-League team
  • Finished last season 12-8 (4-1 Summit League) in singles during the spring season, posting a 7-3 record at the No. 2 spot
  • Earned a 13-5 (3-1 Summit League) record at the No. 1 spot in doubles play

Evan Fragistas | Drake | Sophomore

  • Transferred from Virginia Tech
  • Finished the spring with a 12-8 tally in singles playing primarily at No. 5 and No. 6
  • Claimed crucial singles points in wins over No. 44 Duke and No. 16 Notre Dame
  • Advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Region Championship

Matt Hulme | Omaha | Junior

  • Played two seasons at College of Coastal Georgia
  • Named Freshman of the Year in the Sun Conference
  • Ranked as high as No. 2 in the country in singles and top 25 in doubles
  • Notched a 15-0 singles record and 10-6 doubles mark

Brandon Ancona | Valparaiso | Senior

  • 2018-19 Summit League Player of the Year and All-League honoree
  • Finished the season with a singles record of 23-6, which ranks 10th in program history for a single-season
  • Went 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, 15-4 in dual match play and 5-1 in league singles action
  • Enters the season with 61 career single wins which ranks ninth on Valpo's all-time list

Nam Pham | Illinois State | Freshman

  • Ranked as high as No. 27 in the United States under 18's
  • Rated as a 5-star recruit on tennisrecruiting.net
  • Ranked No. 1 in USTA Missouri Valley region and captured two Summer Sweet 16 championships
  • Earned the National Open Champion title

Geronimo Espin Busleiman | Oral Roberts | Freshman

  • Reached as high as No. 40 on the ITF Junior World Rankings
  • Picked up wins over the 2019 No. 1 athlete and 2018 No. 7 athlete
  • Ranked as high as No. 704 in singles and No. 721 in doubles in the ATP World Tour

Andreja Petrovic | North Dakota | Freshman

  • Competed on the ATP tour last summer
  • Reached the Round of 16 in a tournament in Cairo
  • Was ranked by the ITF among junior competitors
