ELMHURST, Ill. -- For the third consecutive season, The Summit League will be represented by at least two teams in the WNIT. South Dakota earned the league's automatic bid, while Western Illinois received an-large selection.
South Dakota is competing in the postseason for the eighth consecutive season and making its fifth WNIT appearance in that span. The Coyotes are 9-3 all-time in the tournament. This will be the first meeting in program history between the South Dakota Coyotes and the Houston Cougars.
The Coyotes (26-6) earned the automatic bid to the WNIT as The Summit League regular season champions. South Dakota ran through the league slate with a perfect 14-0, becoming the first undefeated Summit champion since 1994. The Coyote roster features a well-rounded offense with nine different leading scorers throughout the season.
The Purple and Gold (22-9, 10-4) finished third in The Summit League standings and made it to the semifinal round of the league tournament before falling to South Dakota State. The Leathernecks are now on their way to their sixth postseason appearance in program history (three WNIT appearances, two NCAA Tournaments and one WBI appearance).

Through 35 years of Division I athletics, The Summit League features women's basketball teams from eight member institutions: Denver, Fort Wayne, North Dakota State, Omaha, Oral Roberts, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Western Illinois with North Dakota becoming an official member for the 2018-19 season. In 2016-17, The Summit League raised its RPI for the third consecutive year, finishing with an all-time best No. 11 ranking.
