SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For the sixth-consecutive season, Denver was selected by The Summit League's nine head coaches to win the #SummitWGF Championship in April. Summit League officials released its 2019 Women's Golf Preseason Poll and Golfers to Watch list Thursday.

The Pioneers, who have represented the league in the NCAA Tournament during each of their five seasons as league members, received all eight of the first-place votes they could receive while South Dakota State followed in second place with 55 points. Oral Roberts took third with 51 points and received the remaining first-place vote. North Dakota State, who won the 2018 Summit League Championship, was fourth with 41 points and followed closely by South Dakota who took fifth with 39 points.

#SummitWGF Preseason Notes

  • For the first time since the 2007-08 golf season, the women's preseason favorite did not go onto win the Championship title last season. North Dakota State defeated preseason favorite Denver by four strokes in Nebraska City, Neb.
  • This is the sixth consecutive season the Denver Pioneers have topped the preseason poll. DU managed to earn the league's first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2018 after seeing its four-year postseason run as league champions come to an end.
  • Five of the 2018 All-Summit League recipients return for the 2019 spring campaign, including three from South Dakota State. The returning first-teamers are Teresa Toscano (SDSU) and Mary Weinstein (Denver) while the returning second-teamers are Sydney Bormann (SDSU), Cassidy Laidlaw (SDSU), and Sophie Newlove (Denver).
  • Newlove is the reigning Championship MVP after she won a three-person playoff to capture medalist honors at The 2018 Summit League Championship. She defeated 2018 Golfer of the Year Natalie Roth (NDSU) and Toscano to win the title.
  • Toscano shot a final round 69 (-3), which tied for the lowest single-round score recorded by a golfer in Summit League Championship history.
  • During the 2018 fall season, Weinstein topped all Summit League golfers with a 72.4 stroke average while Toscano was second with a 73.1 clip. Oral Roberts freshman Sarah Bell was third at 73.4.**
  • The Pioneers posted the top team scoring average during the fall, turning in a 299.5 average while Oral Roberts and South Dakota State were tied for second at 300.9.
  • In the history of the league, only three programs have ever won the women's golf championship: Oral Roberts (15), Denver (4) and North Dakota State (2)

** Minimum nine rounds played
