OPELIKA, Ala. -- The Denver women's golf team opened play at the Auburn Regional on Monday, finishing in a tie for 11th after the opening 18 holes at the Saugahatchee Country Club. Freshman Trussy Li was the top DU golfer during the opening round, standing in a tie for 20th after posting a 74 (+2) thanks to a team-high three birdies on her card.

Summit League Championship MVP Mary Weinstein was a stroke of Li's pace, registering a 75 (+3). She is tied for 34th, which is five shots off the pace set by a trio of golfers: Michaela Williams (Tennessee), Virunpat Olankitkunchai (Maryland) and Auston Kim (Vanderbilt).

The Pioneers finished with a 304 (+16) total, which is 17 shots behind Vanderbilt (287; -1), who holds a slim three-shot lead on Duke (290; +2) and four-shot lead on Florida State (291; +3) and East Carolina (291; +3).

"Our freshmen and Mary were outstanding today," DU head coach Lindsay Kuhle said. "Having three scores at 4-over or better is really good on a championship course like this. We need to clean up holes 11 and 12 and find a solution on how to make solid pars on them the next two days as those two holes alone cost us eight strokes of the scores that counted today."

Li's classmate Alyson Bean fired a 76 (+4) and is tied for 51st. Camille Enright rounded out the scorers for the Pioneers with a 79 (+7).

DU is tied with California and will also be paired with Alabama in second-round play Tuesday. Those three teams will go off hole No. 10 at 8 a.m. CT. The 54-hole event concludes on Wednesday with the top six teams and top three individuals all advancing to the NCAA Championships.
