SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A pair of North Dakota State seniors collected the initial Summit League women's soccer Player of the Week awards, announced by league officials on Monday. Forward Mariah Haberle netted the first offensive accolade of her career after scoring critical goals in both contests during the season-opening weekend, while goalkeeper Monica Polgar was stout in between the pipes, recording 17 saves in NDSU's 1-0-1 start to the season.
Polgar racked up her sixth career defensive accolade, which moves her into a tie for second for the most such honors in Summit League history.
Haberle, a first-team All-Summit League performer a year ago, tallied the game-winning goal in NDSU's 1-0 victory over St. Mary's to open the season. In the Bison's 1-1 tie with reigning Big Sky Champion Montana, Haberle scored NDSU's lone goal in the 30th-minute to put her team ahead 1-0. The Plymouth, Minn., native was one of two Summit League players to score a goal in multiple games last week.
Polgar opened the season with her 16th-career shutout as she made eight saves in the 1-0 victory over St. Mary's. She backed up that performance by equaling her career-high with nine saves during the 1-1 draw with the Grizzlies.
