Pioneers picked to claim seventh-straight league title

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Six-time reigning Summit League champion Denver was picked to take home the 2020 women's tennis championship according to the preseason poll of league head coaches released Wednesday. The Pioneers have earned both the regular season and tournament titles in each of their first six seasons in the league.

Denver totaled 25 points and received five of the six possible first-place votes to finish atop the poll. Oral Roberts edged South Dakota (17) to claim the second-place spot with 18 total points and the remaining first-place vote. North Dakota tallied 15 points to take third place while last year's runner-up Omaha (10) and Western Illinois (5) rounded out the 2019-20 poll.

WOMEN'S TENNIS PRESEASON ATHLETES TO WATCH LIST

Anna Riedmiller | Denver | Junior

  • 2018-19 All-League recipient
  • Finished last season 17-2 (4-0 Summit League) in singles during the spring season, posting an 8-2 overall record at No. 2 and 9-0 at No. 3
  • Earned a 14-5 (5-0 Summit League) record in doubles play with a combined 12-5 record on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts

Ivana Babic | Oral Roberts | Senior

  • Transferred from North Texas
  • Made the All-C-USA Second Team in doubles
  • Went 11-4 in singles and 9-8 in doubles in the spring of 2019
  • Defeated No. 21 ranked players in doubles at the Texas Regional in 2019

Oleksandra Nahurska | Oral Roberts | Freshman

  • Ranked No. 9 in girls 18's rankings in Ukraine
  • Held a No. 19 spot in the women's rankings
  • Has multiple wins during her high school career

Jana Lazarevic | South Dakota | Junior

  • Two-time All-League honoree (2018, 2019)
  • Played No. 1 singles and posted a 7-9 dual mark as well as a 9-13 overall mark (3-2 Summit League)
  • Went 3-1 in league play at the No. 3 spot in doubles and finished with an overall doubles record of 6-3

Madison Gallegos | Omaha | Junior

  • Transferred from Florida Gulf Coast
  • Named All-ASUN in doubles, All-ASUN Second Team and All-Freshman in her debut season with the Eagles
  • Notched six wins at No. 3 singles and went undefeated at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots

Kaede Amano | North Dakota | Senior

  • 2018-19 All-League recipient
  • Finished last season with an 8-12 overall record (2-2 Summit League), posting a 3-2 record in the No. 1 spot and a 5-10 mark at the No. 2 spot
  • Recorded a 6-13 overall record in doubles with a 1-3 mark in league play

Laura Ballesteros | Western Illinois | Senior

  • Finished with an 8-7 single record overall last season
  • Owned a 2-1 record in league play for singles
  • Tied for team-leading five dual match and two league wins
