FORT
WAYNE, Ind. Oral Roberts won its third consecutive Summit
League Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-3 victory over top-seed
and host IPFW Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles, seeded second
in the tournament, avenged an earlier loss to the Mastodons to
claim their eighth Summit League title.
ORU
(9-9) fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point. In singles
play, the Golden Eagles came up short at both the No. 1 and No. 2
positions.
Victories
at the No. 3 through 6 singles positions proved to be the
difference for ORU, each of which came in straight sets. Tayler
Pippen claimed a 6-0, 6-2, win over Yuka Kobayashi at No. 3 and Ana
Costa won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. Wins at No. 5 by Corrine Langston,
6-2, 6-3, over Katie Brien, and at No. 6 by Ekaterina Kondrashova,
6-3, 6-4, over Alexandra Forsyth, propelled ORU to the
title.
The
Golden Eagles earn The Summit League's automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament. The NCAA bracket announcement is scheduled for April 28
on ESPNEWS and first and second round competition is slated for May
8-9.
