UMKC's Smith, IPFW's Vescovi Named Tennis Players of the Week
ELMHURST, Ill. - UMKC's Patrick Smith and IPFW's Raquel
Vescovi were named as The Summit League's men's and women's tennis
player of the week for their performances March 30-April 5.

Smith collected his second honor of the season and the fourth
of his career after recording a perfect record during the week with
three singles wins and three doubles victories to extend his
combined (singles and doubles) win streak to 13 matches. Playing
the No. 2 single spot, Smith led off the week by topping
Jacksonville's Jose Fantova Sicre, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5) before
rolling to straight-set wins over Bethune-Cookman's Emil Vassilev,
6-0, 6-1, and Niagara's Brandon Gallegos, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles
play, Smith teamed with Bret Berryman at No. 1 for wins over
tandems from Jacksonville, Bethune-Cookman and Niagara. The duo set
a school record for season wins by a No. 1 doubles team and Smith
is just one win shy of tying his own school mark for season
victories at No. 2 singles.

Vescovi garnered her first career award after
posting a combined 7-0 record, including four singles victories,
while helping IPFW to a perfect 4-0 mark during league play.
Playing the No. 3 singles position, Vescovi rolled to a trio of
straight-set wins over Centenary's Holden Penney (6-0, 6-0),
IUPUI's Shelby Hullett (6-3, 6-2) and Western Illinois' Jill
Furlong (6-0, 6-0). In IPFW's victory over previous league-unbeaten
Oral Roberts, Vescovi rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Tayler
Pippin. Vescovi teamed with Yuka Kobayaski for victories over IUPUI
(8-1), ORU (8-5) and WIU (8-5) and the duo has won 12 of their last
13 matches. Individually, Vescovi is on a nine-match win
streak.
