IUPUI's Agaba, NDSU's Carlson Named Scholar-Athletes of the Year

State women's cross country and track & field athlete
Whitney Carlson (Buchanan, N.D.) have been
selected as the 2010-11 Summit League Scholar-Athletes of the Year
in a vote by the league's faculty athletic representatives. The
Summit League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is the most
prestigious individual honor given by the league.
Following his junior season, Agaba has a cumulative
grade-point average of 4.0 with a biomedical engineering major and
pre-med and mathematics minors. He was named to the ESPN Academic
All-America First Team as selected by CoSIDA, has earned three
Academic All-Summit League selections and twice has been named to
The Summit League's Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence. In
the last two years, Agaba has been awarded with three scholarships
for academic and extracurricular activities including the 2010
Bepko Scholarship, 2010 ProAAct Scholarship and the 2011 IUPUI
Michael A. Carroll Scholarship. Entering his senior year, he has
also been named to the IUPUI School of Engineering & Technology
Dean's Lists all three years. In addition, Agaba serves as a peer
mentor and tutor in mathematics and chemistry at IUPUI and is a
mentor at Harshman Elementary School in Indianapolis. He is also
involved as a volunteer with the Urban Soccer Development Program
and Project Lead the Way, along with the National Robotics
Competition.
On the soccer pitch, Agaba was a 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru
Second Team All-Midwest Region selection along with earning
All-Summit League Second Team honors. He is a two-time Summit
League All-Tournament Team honoree and was named to the 2008 Summit
League All-Newcomer Team. Agaba has 11 goals and six assists in 54
career matches. Of his 11 goals, five have been match-winners as he
has ranked among the league's top five in that category in each of
the past two seasons. Agaba also served as an assistant captain for
the Jaguar men's soccer team in 2010.
The top student in her graduating class, Carlson completed
her biology degree while minoring in zoology and business
administration. The Buchanan, N.D., native was a two-time Capital
One Academic All-American First Team Selection (2010, 2011), after
being named first team All-District each of the last three years. A
Blue Key and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies member, Carlson has been
a USTFCCCA Division I Academic All-American the last two years and
earned the NCAA Elite 88 Award this season. During her time at
NDSU, she was the recipient of six different scholarships for her
academia, including the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Carlson was the track & field representative on the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and volunteered at the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games for two weeks. She has also been involved in
numerous community activities at the Children's Hospital in
Fargo.
A five-time USTFCCCA All-American, Carlson earned four of those
honors this season. She placed fifth in the heptathlon and ninth in
the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, along with a
12th-place long jump finish and 16th-place pentathlon finish at the
NCAA Indoor Championships. Carlson has collected the last two
Indoor Field Athlete of the Year awards, earned Track Championship
MVP honors last season and was the league's Indoor Athlete of the
Year in 2008-09. She has won eight league indoor championship
events during her career, second-most in league history. Carlson
has also won eight outdoor league championships to go along with a
pair of Athlete of the Year awards (2009, 2011) and Track
Championship MVP and Field Championship MVP honors this season.
