ELMHURST, Ill. - Western Illinois' Sammy Marshall and North Dakota State's Whitney Johnson were named The Summit League's Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for their performances Feb. 9-12, marking the initial awards of the 2012 season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Marshall garners her first career Player of the Week award after helping the Leathernecks to a 2-2 opening weekend record with a four-game hitting streak, including two multi-hit games. The freshman infielder started her collegiate career going 2-for-4 with one run and two stolen bases against Drake. She came back the next day against Iowa State with another 2-for-4 performance adding one run and a stolen base. For the weekend, Marshall hit 400 (6-for-15) with a .438 on-base percentage and tallied five runs and five stolen bases.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Johnson claims her fourth career Pitcher of the Week honor and first of the season after posting a 3-1 record, setting a school record for strike outs in a single game and posting three double-digit strikeout performances. The right-handed hurler opened the season by fanning a school-record 19 batters in an eight inning one-hit victory over Toledo. She came back the next day by tallying 10 strikeouts in a win over UC Riverside and ended the weekend shutting out Long Beach State with another 10 strikeout game. On the weekend, Johnson fanned 44 batters, while yielding 11 hits, six walks and two earned runs and averaging 11.85 strikeouts per seven innings. She posted a 0.54 ERA and held her opponents to a combined .128 batting average.
