SUU Men and NDSU Women Capture Indoor Track and Field Titles

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Southern Utah men's track and field team and the North Dakota State women's squad claimed the 2012 Summit League Indoor Track and Field titles at the IPFW Athletics Center Fieldhouse. NDSU's championship marks a league record fifth-straight crown for the Bison women.

NDSU captured the women's title with 206 points ahead of league newcomer South Dakota in second-place with 115 points and Southern tallying 80 points in third. South Dakota State took fourth place with 76 points, while UNMKC finished fifth with 63 points. One point separated Oral Roberts (53 points) and Western Illinois (52 points) in sixth and seventh. Oakland (14 points) and IPFW (four points) rounded out the standings.

The Thunderbirds won the men's crown with 142 points, while Oral Roberts finished runner-up with a total of 118 points. North Dakota State took third with 104 points followed by South Dakota finishing fourth in its first league championship with 89 points. South Dakota State tallied 83 points for fifth place and UMKC took sixth with 75 points. Western Illinois (41 points) and Oakland (nine points) finished seventh and eighth.

Southern Utah claimed four of the eight individual league awards. SUU's Diana Medina-Mitchell and Cameron Levins earned Track Championship MVP honors, while SDSU's Lora Shearer and Jared Vlastuin garnered the Field Championship MVP awards. USD's Analisa Huschle and SUU's Austin West were named the Newcomer of the Championships. NDSU's Ryun Godfrey was named the women's Coach of the Year and SUU's Eric Houle was named the men's Coach of the Year.

Day two of the championships got started with the men's heptathlon as NDSU's Andy Lillejord won two of the last three events, the pole vault and the 1,000-meter run, to take first in overall event with 5,517 points. SUU's Wade Nielson (5,015 points) finished second and NDSU's Weston Leutz (4,935 points) took third.

The track events on day two began with the mile run. On the women's side, SUU's Medina-Mitchell won with a time of 4:57.14, while WIU's Chelsea Lynes (4:58.55) came finished second and NDSU's Maddie McClellan (4:58.71) took third.

In the men's mile run, Thunderbird Levins won his second individual event of the championships with a winning time of 4:10.26. NDSU's Travis Fitzke (4:11.74) finished runner-up and SUU teammate West (4:13.60) took third.

Bison Paige Stratioti claimed the 400 meter title in 55.57 followed by USD's Alex Duling (55.64) and NDSU teammate Brittany Page (56.19) in second and third, respectively.

The Golden Eagles swept the men's 400 meters as Jeffery Gibson defended his title crossing the finish line first in 48.25 followed by teammates Brandon Williams (49.03) and Jeramy Roberts (49.34).

NDSU's Deborah John defended her title in the 60 meters with a winning time of 7.63, while ORU's Cornisha Wilkerson (7.65) came in second and USD's Huschle (7.68) took third.

In the men's 60-meter dash, SUU's Shaun Murray claimed the title with a time of 6.96. ORU's Boyea Lockett (7.06) was runner-up and UMKC's Charles Hinton (7.08) finished third.

NDSU's John won her second title of the day and second-straight title in the 60-meter hurdles with a league record time of 8.49, breaking the her own league record set at last year's championship. SUU's Jasmine Mullins (8.58) took second place and USD's Duling (8.71) took third.

On the men's side, NDSU's Leutz won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.26 followed by ORU's Jonathan Reed (8.31) in second and UMKC's Kristen Hepburn (8.34) in third.

Coyote Emma Ladwig won her first career league title in the 800 meters with a league record time of 2:09.96. Ladwig bested Valparaiso's Collette Liss' time of 2:11.37 set in 1998. NDSU's Faith Kruchowski (2:10.78) finished runner-up and ORU's Marrisa Thomas (2:13.35) took third.

SUU's Levins won the men's 800 meters and posted a record time of 1:50.81, which marked his third event win and second league record of the championships. USD's Casey Shade (1:51.14) came in second and NDSU's Fitzke (1:53.18) finished third.

Bison Antoinette Goodman captured her second consecutive title in the women's 200 meters crossing the finish line in 24.66. ORU's Wilkerson (24.87) came in second and NDSU's Page (25.08) took third.

ORU's Gibson won his second event of the day with a time of 22.49 in the men's 200 meters. SUU's Murray (22.15) and UMKC's Josh Butler (22.44) finished second and third, respectively.

The Thunderbirds swept the final two individual track events of the championships. Medina-Mitchell won the women's 5,000 meters with a league record time of 15:64.60, breaking IPFW's Crystina Martinez's record of 16:52.31 set in 2009. WIU's Carianna Cottone-Gibb (17:10.54) claimed the runner up spot and NDSU's Heidi Peterson (17:21.78) took third.

Levins earned his fourth event title winning the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:35.15, followed by teammate West (14:39.70) and UMKC's Cosmas Ayabei (14:39.77).

The Bison women won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:47.20. The team was made up of Page, Ashlynn Simon, Brittany Schanandore and Stratioiti. ORU (3:47.77) came in second and UMKC (3:48.23) took third.

On the men's side, the Coyotes claimed their first league relay title with a time of 3:17.77. The USD squad consisted of Erik Hill, Jeff O'Connell, Shade and Lukas Bernard. SDSU (3:18.90) finished runner-up and UMKC (3:22.36) grabbed third.

The field events on day two began with the women's triple jump as USD's Kenna Wolter won her first career league crown tying the league record with a jump of 41'9.25" (12.73m). UMKC's Stephany Johnson (40'6.75"/12.36) came in second and Coyote teammate Huschle (39'3.25"/11.97m) took third.

The men's triple jump was won by SDSU's Vlastuin with a distance of 48'2.75" (14.70m). UMKC's DC Okonta (47'3.50"/14.41m) and ORU's Tim Jones II (46'10.00"/14.27m) finished second and third, respectively.

In the women's shot put, Thunderbird Kayla Kovar defended her title with a mark of 51'0.75" (15.56m) followed by SDSU's McKenzie Johnson (48'9.00/14.86m) and WIU's Dana LaRue (48'5.50"/14.77m) in second and third.

Coyote Kyle McKelvey won the men's shot put with a throw of 54'4.50" (16.57m). SUU's Chris Johnson (53'10.50"/16.42m) took second and USD's Cody Snyder (53'5.00"/16.28m) came in third.

South Dakota State swept the high jump events. Mary Wirth won the women's high jump clearing a height of 5'9.75" (1.77m), while NDSU's Toni Tollefson (5'5.75"/1.67m) and SDSU's Kali Olson (5'3.75"/1.62m) rounded out the top-three.

On the men's side, Vlastuin claimed the title with league record jump of 7'1.00" (2.16m). WIU's Michael Crabtree and Jamario Taylor both cleared 6'9.00" (2.06m) for second and third.

Bison Leslie Brost defended her title in the pole vault clearing a height of 13'11.25" (4.25m) followed by USD's Emily Grove (13'7.25"/4.15m) and NDSU teammate Caitlin Mack (12'3.50"/3.75m) in second and third, respectively.
