KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Top-seeded Oral Roberts outlasted IPFW, 4-3, in a back-and-forth match to win the 2012 Summit League Women's Tennis Championship Saturday. The title is the Golden Eagles' first since 2009 and sends them to the NCAA Tournament.
The match came down to a battle at the No. 1 singles position between Summit League Player of the Year Iryna Khatsko of ORU and Summit League Newcomer of the Year Anita Henestrosa of IPFW. Each player claimed 6-4 wins to set the stage for a winner-take-all deciding set. With the league championship hanging in the balance, Khatsko cruised to a 6-1 win to clinch the title for her team.
ORU (13-5) opened the match with a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point. Lina Semenova and Haley Martin won 8-3 at No. 1 while Khatsko and Kristin Gray posted an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
IPFW (18-11) knotted the match at one when Caterina Kiefer won in straight sets at No. 4 singles.
The match seesawed with the Golden Eagles winning at No. 2 singles behind Semenova's straight-set win before the Mastodons evened the score at two when Alex Forsyth won at No. 6.
The teams continued to alternate points to set up the duel at No. 1 for the league championship. IPFW's Raquel Vescovi secured a win at No. 3 to put her team ahead, 3-2. Marizanne Bouwer answered and evened the match at three with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5.
