ELMHURST, Ill. - Summit League regular season champion Oral Roberts led the way as it placed 11 selections on the baseball all-league teams. The awards were announced at the annual banquet Tuesday night and were voted on by the league's head coaches.
Omaha's Clayton Taylor was named the league's Player of the Year and teammate Tyler Fox captured Pitcher of the Year honors. Oral Roberts' Brent Williams earned the Newcomer of the Year award while his head coach Ryan Folmar garned the Coach of the Year accolade.
Taylor collected the Player of the Year award after leading the league in RBI this season. The senior third baseman has 66 RBI this season with 36 of those coming against league opposition. In addition to RBI, he also leads his squad in slugging percentage (.560) and home runs (11). He also added 41 runs and 12 doubles to go along with his .333 batting average. A two-time Player of the Week recipient this year, he earns his third consecutive first team all-league honor and fourth overall of his career.
Fox earned the Pitcher of the Year honors after leading the league in wins (10), complete games (2) and innings pitched (93.2). The senior righty is also ranked second in the league with 69 strikeouts and a 3.17 ERA on the season. Fox, the 2014 Pitcher of the Year, holds the school record with 30 career wins, which ranks third all-time in The Summit League, and earned three Pitcher of the Week awards this season.
Williams was named Newcomer of the Year after leading Oral Roberts in both RBI (52) and home runs (8). His 52 RBI also rank second in The Summit League entering tournament play. The junior first baseman has recorded a .310 batting average on the year with a .478 slugging percentage, .344 on-base percentage, 10 doubles and 29 runs. Williams becomes the 13th Golden Eagle to earn Newcomer of the Year honors.
Folmar captured his second consecutive Coach of the Year honor and the second of his career after leading Oral Roberts to its 16th regular season championship title in 17 years competing in the league. The Golden Eagles recorded a 22-8 regular season league mark and dropped just two league games at home. Folmar guided the Golden Eagles to the top seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament for the 16th time in program history.
The Summit League Championship begins Wednesday, in Tulsa, Okla., with No. 2 Omaha facing No. 3 Fort Wayne at Noon (CT), followed by host and top seed Oral Roberts vs. No. 4 South Dakota State at 6 p.m. (CT). The double elimination tournament continues with two games Thursday, one game Friday and the championship game(s) slated for Saturday.
