The Summit League Announces Final Men’s Soccer Weekly Awards

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Summit League officials announced the final players of the week for the 2018 men's soccer season. Western Illinois senior forward Drew Whalen has been named the offensive player of the week, while Omaha senior defenseman Denzel Ward has been named the defensive player of the week.
Whalen scored two goals in his final match for the Leathernecks. His strong offensive output helped Western Illinois defeat Purdue Fort Wayne on senior day in Macomb, Ill. Woods led a defensive unit for the Mavericks that earned their fourth shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over Eastern Illinois. Omaha's win over the Panthers secured a second-place finish in The Summit League standings.
Offensive Player of the Week
Drew Whalen, Western Illinois
Sr. | Forward/Midfield | Peoria, Ill.
• Scored two goals against Purdue Fort Wayne in his final career match
• Had four shots on goal
• Helped the Leathernecks defeat Purdue Fort Wayne 5-1 for their first Summit League victory
• This is his fourth career offensive player of the week award and first this season

Defensive Player of the Week
Denzel Woods, Omaha
Sr. | Defenseman | Santa Cruz, Trinidad & Tobago
• Led an Omaha defense to a shut out victory over Eastern Illinois to finish second in The Summit League standings
• Helped the Maverick defense give up zero shots on goal, and just two shots total
• Omaha didn't allow a corner kick in the contest
• This is Woods' first career Summit League Defensive Player of the Week honor
