Fort Wayne's Brinker, SDSU's Toscano Named Golfers of the Week
ELMHURST, Ill. – Fort Wayne's Eric Brinker was named the men's golfer of the week after posting back-to-back top three finishes at the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational (March 1-2) and Lonnie Barton Invitational (March 5-6), while South Dakota State's Teresa Toscano earned her second-career golfer of the week nod for her performance at the Hurricane Invitational (March 5-7).
This is the first-career weekly league honor for Brinker, who carded a 6-under-par 138 score at the Lonnie Barton Invitational. The freshman from Evansville, Ind., finished in first-place by four strokes among a field of 94 golfers, turning in back-to-back 69's at the 36-hole tournament. Brinker's two-round total now ranks second-best in Mastodon golf history, while his 6-under tally is the lowest score ever for a Fort Wayne golfer in relation to par.
Brinker also competed at the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational earlier in the week, managing a 6-over 222 scorecard and a third-place finish on the individual leaderboard—only four shots off the lead. At both tournaments, the Mastodons earned second-place team finishes.
South Dakota State's Tocasno tied for 17th individually at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla., Wednesday with a 54-hole score of 7-over 223. Her stroke total (223) and placement (T-17th) were season bests, while the reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year also defeated the No. 20 and No. 60 ranked golfers in the NCAA.
