Drake’s Johansson, Denver’s Melville claim tennis weekly honors

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Drake men's tennis athlete Oliver Johansson and Denver women's tennis athlete Taylor Melville secured Summit League athlete of the week honors after both went undefeated in their respective competitions.

Melville helped the Pioneers defeat Air Force 7-0 and Gonzaga 6-1 after clinching her singles and doubles points. At the No. 1 spot in doubles, Melville and her partner overcame Air Force opponents 6-1. In singles action, she defeated T.J. Fumagalli 6-2, 2-6 (11-9) at the No. 1 spot.

Following her performance against Air Force, Melville and her doubles partner turned around on Sunday and earned another win at the No. 1 spot in defeating Cate Broerman and Taylor Gruber of Gonzaga 6-1. In singles, she matched up against Broerman in the top spot of the lineup and defeated her 6-3, 6-2.

On the men's side, Johansson won every match in his debut weekend for the Bulldogs and contributed four points for Drake (three in singles, one in doubles), during the Bulldogs' three matches over the weekend.

In the Bulldogs' 4-3 win over Western Michigan, Johansson and his doubles partner earned the only doubles win of the match with a 6-4 victory over in the No. 3 position. He then turned around and took his singles match 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot.

Against Northern Illinois, he and his partner were able to notch a victory again in doubles at the No. 2 spot defeating their opponents 6-1. He then went on to match up against David Pata at the No. 2 spot in singles and won 6-3, 6-3.

In his final match of the weekend against Gonzaga, he and his doubles partner helped clinch the doubles point defeating their opponents 6-2 at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. During singles, he played in the No. 3 position where he went on to defeat Kyle Everly 6-4, 6-3 to give the Bulldogs their only singles point of the match.
