SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Western Illinois guard Colton Sandage secured the latest TicketSmarter #SummitMBB Player of the Week award, league officials announced Monday. The Leatherneck junior averaged 22.0 ppg during a trio of double-digit victories over fellow mid-major foes.
Sandage’s efforts from the week has this year’s WIU squad sitting at 8-2 overall, which is the program’s best 10-game start during its Division I era (since 1981-82). The eight wins are already more than the team’s win total from 2020-21 (7-15).
He led the Leathernecks in scoring in two of those victories, shooting 60 percent from the field (19-for-32) and 64 percent from 3-point range (14-for-22) for the week, while adding seven assists and five steals.
Sandage opened WIU’s perfect week with a career-high 33 points in a 93-80 victory over Ball State. He went 7-for-9 from beyond the arc against the Cardinals to account for most of his points and added two steals.
The Bloomington, Ill., native capped it with a team-high 25 points in a 97-70 thumping of Central Michigan. In the road win over the Chippewas on Sunday, Sandage shot better than 50 percent from beyond the arc for the fourth straight game, drilling 5-of-9 attempts. He also had four assists and two more steals.
