Jackrabbits blank Omaha to stay alive

South Dakota State Interviews (Head Coach Rob Bishop and pitcher Drew Beazley)

OMAHA, Neb. –
South Dakota State's Drew Beazley and Brett Mogen combined on a three-hit shutout to keep the fourth-seeded Jackrabbits alive in the 2021 #SummitBSB Championship presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare. The SDSU bats also did their part stringing together 12 hits in the 7-0 victory that eliminated third-seeded Omaha.

Second baseman Avery Mellman put the Jackrabbits on the scoreboard with a two-run single in the second. It was the second straight game in the tournament that a pair of walks proved costly for the Mavericks as both of those players came across to score on Mellman's line drive into left field.

The Mavericks threatened in their half of the second loading the bases off Beazley, but the all-league second teamer got some help from shortstop Luke Ira, who leaped to snag a line drive off the bat of Grant Goldston to keep SDSU up by two.

The Jacks tacked on a run in the fourth when Jordan Sagedahl plated a run with an infield single before breaking the game open with a three-run sixth.

Omaha reliever Jackson Gordon retired the first two Jacks in that frame, but the next five would reach as they extended the lead to 6-0. Ira pushed the first of three runs i the frame across after drawing a bases loaded walk. Ryan McDonald drove in the next two with a RBI-single to center.

Beazley gave way to Brett Mogen after five innings and the Jackrabbit reliever retired 12 of 13 batters he faced, allowing just a leadoff walk in the ninth, to pick up his second save of the campaign.

Notable Notes
• SDSU's last shutout in the tournament came in 2013 when the Jackrabbits blanked North Dakota State in back-to-back games to win the title.
• Centerfielder Reece Anderson had a career-high three hits to pace the Jacks' offense. He went just 6-for-32 during the regular season.
•  Anderson was one of four Jackrabbits that had multiple hits as both he and Avery Mellman added two RBI.
•  Chris Esposito's fourth-inning single was the final base hit of the game for the Mavericks, who only collected three total in the contest.
