DU's Smith garners TicketSmarter #SummitMBB weekly award

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Denver guard Tevin Smith garnered the latest TicketSmarter #SummitMBB Player of the Week awards, league officials announced Monday. The Pioneer rookie led his squad to back-to-back wins by averaging 20.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg in those victories.

In Monday’s 63-55 road win at Kansas City, Smith went 7-for-7 from the field and 8-for-8 from the foul stripe as his perfect shooting night led to a career-high 23 points. He also added 10 rebounds to register the first double-double of his career and the Pioneers snapped a 42-game road losing streak with the victory.

In Saturday’s 94-63 win over Omaha, Smith tallied 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor as the Pios won back-to-back league games for the first time in three seasons. He added two rebounds and two assists against the Mavericks.

The Danville, Ill., native finished the week shooting 73.7 percent from the field and is the first freshman to win the weekly honor this season. DU has racked up its most league wins since 2017-18 with four now under first-year head coach Jeff Wilbrun.
