#SummitWBB Weekly Notebook: Postseason Edition

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For the first time since 2018-19 three teams have earned trips to postseason tournaments. South Dakota will be competing in the NCAA Tournament while South Dakota State and Kansas City will be making appearances in the WNIT.
 
South Dakota (27-5) earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament as the No. 10 seed in the Wichita Region. The Coyotes will play seventh-seeded Ole Miss in the opening round Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT in Waco, Texas. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
 
South Dakota State (23-9) earned an automatic bid to the WNIT and will host an opening-round game against Ohio. The Jackrabbits tipoff on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT with the game being televised on Midco Sports.
 
For the second time in program history, Kansas City (23-8) earned a spot in the WNIT. The Roos begin their journey on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT in Cedar Falls, Iowa against Northern Iowa. The game will be shown on ESPN3.

#SummitWBB lands THREE in Postseason Competition
  • Kansas City, South Dakota and South Dakota State will represent The Summit League in the postseason. The last time three league teams made it to postseason tournaments was in 2018-19 when South Dakota State earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, South Dakota claimed an at-large to the NCAA Tournament and Denver made an appearance in the WNIT.
  • In the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, South Dakota earned the No. 10 seed in the Wichita Region. The Coyotes will play seventh-seeded Ole Miss in the opening round Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT in Waco, Texas.
  • In the WNIT, South Dakota State earned an automatic bid and will host an opening-round game on Thursday against Ohio at 7 p.m. CT. Kansas City will travel to Cedar Fall, Iowa, Thursday and take on Northern Iowa in the first round at 6 p.m. CT.
Things to Watch
  • South Dakota's Chloe Lamb and Western Illinois' Danni Nichols were named to the midseason watch list for the 2021-22 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year presented by Her Hoop Stats following impressive starts to the 2021-22 season.
  • Lamb is averaging 16.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game so far this season.
  • Nichols is currently averaging a team-leading 15.8 points per game, shooting 53 percent from the field and over 67 percent from behind the charity stripe. She is also averaging 4.6 rebounds and over two assists per contest.
30-Plus Point Club
  • On Nov. 20, Kacie Borowicz had a record-breaking showing to help North Dakota to an 89-85 win over Montana State. Borowicz went a perfect 20-for-20 from the free throw line which beats the prior UND single-game record for most free throws made in a game set back in 1990. She finished the game with a game-high 33 points.
  • Denver's Anna Jackson sunk 10 threes and scored a Denver women's basketball Division I school-record 36 points to lead the Pioneers to an 87-65 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Nov. 26.
  • On Nov. 27, South Dakota defeated the ACC's Pitt with the help of Chloe Lamb's career-high 30 points. She went 12-for-23 from the field with 10 of her career-high points coming in overtime.
  • Omaha picked up its first victory of the season defeating UIC 70-58. Elena Pilakouta led the scoring effort finishing with a career-high 32 points on 14-for-18 shooting from the floor and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.
  • Kansas City defeated UT Arlington on Nov. 28 with the help of Naomie Alnatas' 38-point, seven assists performance. She went 12-for-19 from the field, including 6-for-7 from three-point range, for her second career 35-plus point game.
  • On Dec. 4, Hannah Sjerven scored a career-high 35 points to lead the Coyotes to a 71-59 victory over Wichita State. She had equaled her season-high by halftime, then added on 10 second-half points to tally a career-best 35. She knocked down 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) from the floor and went 12-for-15 from the charity stripe.
  • Against North Dakota State on Jan. 6, Denver's Uju Ezeudu finished a point shy of her career-high with 31 points on 13-for-20 shooting. She also notched eight rebounds, a block and a steal in a season-high 34 minutes.
  • Deja Vu for Borowicz on Jan. 13 as she notched a season-high-tying 33 points in North Dakota’s 76-65 win over Western Illinois. She also secured five rebounds, dished out four assists and snatched a pair of steals in the victory.
  • In St. Thomas' 73-62 victory over North Dakota State, Erin Norling contributed 34 of the Tommies' 73 points in the win. She went 6-for-9 from deep to go along with four rebounds, two assists and a block.
  • South Dakota's Sjerven dropped her third career 30-plus point game against the Fighting Hawks on Jan. 29. She secured 30 points on 13-for-19 shooting from the field, including a career-best three triples.
  • Kansas City's Alnatas notched her second 30-plus point game of this season in the Roos' 62-57 win over St. Thomas on Feb. 3. She finished with 30 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
  • The Roos' Alnatas earned her third 30-plus point game of the season in Kansas City's 81-74 quarterfinal win over North Dakota State in The Summit League Tournament. She scored 26 of her game-high 32 points in the second half to help KC rally from a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat the Bison.
  • The Coyotes' Chloe Lamb notched her second 30-plus point game of the season in USD's 81-67 semifinal win over Kansas City at The Summit League Tournament. She finished with a career-high 33 points on 12-for-16 shooting.
Top 25 National Rankings
  • South Dakota and South Dakota State are receiving votes for the fourth consecutive week in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll. It is the sixth time this season that the Coyotes have received votes and the fourth for the Jackrabbits.
  • The league continues to see three teams being talked about in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. South Dakota moved to No. 4, South Dakota State jumped to No. 5 and Kansas City continues to receive votes.
  • Before this season, the last time three teams were ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll was on Jan. 19, 2021, when South Dakota State (2), South Dakota (5) and North Dakota State (22) all made an appearance within the top 25.

NOTING THE ROOS
  • Despite a semifinal loss, the Roos, with an overall record of 23-8, get to continue its season having getting selected for their second-ever WNIT appearance, the first since 2011-12. The Roos will be searching for their first-ever win in the WNIT.
  • The Roos will meet Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in the opening round of the tournament.
  • Summit League First Team honoree Naomie Alnatas and Newcomer of the Year Brooklyn McDavid lead the Roos heading into the WNIT.
  • Alnatas, the second-best scorer in the league, is averaging 18.8 ppg, 5.2 apg and 1.8 spg.
  • McDavid heads into postseason play averaging 15.3 ppg and 6.4 rpg.
  • The Roos are looking to extend one of the best seasons in program history, as the Roos' 23 wins are just one behind the 1991-92 team for the most all-time.
  • This is the second-career postseason selection for head coach Jacie Hoyt, who led the Roos to its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in the 2019-20 season.
   NOTING THE COYOTES
  • Second-seeded South Dakota claimed its third-consecutive Summit League Women's Basketball Championship trophy after knocking off No. 1 South Dakota State 56-45 in the title game.
  • Lamb won her second consecutive Championship MVP accolade after averaging 18.6 ppg in three victories.
  • Lamb paces the Coyotes with 16 ppg followed by Defensive Player of the Year and first team member Hannah Sjerven as she averages 14.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg and 1.9 bpg.
  • Second Team All-Summit League honoree Liv Korngable rounds out the double-figure scorers for USD with 12.8 ppg and 3.7 apg.
  • This is the fifth NCAA Tournament berth for the Coyotes as they head into the tournament holding the No. 10 seed in the Wichita Region. They will meet with seventh-seeded Ole Miss.
NOTING THE JACKRABBITS
  • Despite a loss in the title game to No. 2 South Dakota, South Dakota State earned an automatic bid to the WNIT and will host an opening-round game against Ohio.  It's the Jackrabbits' fifth WNIT appearance and first since 2017.
  • The Jackrabbits are 7-4 all-time in the tournament and made a run to the semifinal round in 2014.
  • First Team All-Summit League member Myah Selland paces the Jackrabbits averaging 13.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 3.2 apg.
  • Honorable Mention All-Summit League honorees Paiton Burckhard (11.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.2 apg), Tylee Irwin (9.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 apg) and Tori Nelson (10.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.7 apg) also contributed important offensive efforts for the Jacks heading into the postseason tournament.
