#SummitVB Weekly Notebook: No. 6

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Records are meant to be broken. That’s what South Dakota junior outside hitter Elizabeth Juhnke accomplished yesterday, as the Lakeville, Minn., native set a new Summit League record for the kills in a match with 39 at North Dakota State. Furthermore, Junke hit an incredible .451 against NDSU and she continues to lead the nation with 327 kills and ranks first in total points (367) and total attacks (788).

Her 39 kills against the Bison are the most in any match in the NCAA this season and her previous career-high was 35 kills.

North Dakota State (3-0) and Oral Roberts (2-0) started league play undefeated, while USD, SDSU, and UND are 2-1 after the first week of league action.

Denver opened league action with a 3-1 road triumph over South Dakota State in which they won a season-high four straight matches ... The Pioneers were paced by Hailey Green, who finished with 15 kills, while Jordan Lockwood added 14 and Cadi Boyer chipped in 11 ... The next match saw USD defeated DU 3-1 in Vermillion as Lockwood registered a double-double of 11 kills and 16 digs ... Boyer is hitting .364 thus far, which ranks second in the league, while Brianna Green (1.51) and Boyer (1.40) rank second and fourth in the league, respectively in blocks per set.

After falling to Oral Roberts, 3-1, to open league play, Kansas City hosted Western Illinois and came out victorious with a 3-1 win ... Peyton Van Nest and Sydney Henry finished with 25 assists apiece, while Odyssey Warren (20), Kimora Whetstone (10) and Raina Smith (10) all ended with double-digit kills ... The Roos limited the Leathernecks to a .109 hitting percentage while swinging at a .253 clip themselves ... KC heads to the Peace Garden State where they will face UND and NDSU.

Ashlyn Olson and the Fighting Hawks won back-to-back matches road against Western Illinois and St. Thomas to open league play ... Olson ended the weekend with 24 kills, four blocks and three digs while Elizabeth Norris ended the weekend as the leader in assists for UND with a total of 40 ... She recorded a double-double of 19 assists and 15 digs to lead UND against WIU ... This is the first 2-0 start in league play since joining the Summit League in 2018 ... UND dropped their match to SDSU, 3-1, as Sierra Ward led the Fighting Hawks with 12 kills with one dig and one block.

Ali Hinze helped the Bison record back-to-back sweeps to open league play at UST and WIU ... She totaled 30 kills and averaged 5.00 k/set, registered a .361 hitting percentage and notched two double-doubles ... NDSU extended its win streak to three matches after upending South Dakota, 3-2, to snap USD’s 13-match winning streak and also snap an 11-match head-to-head streak by the Coyotes ... Syra Tanchin paced NDSU with her sixth double-double of the season with a career-high 26 kills and 11 digs while adding three service aces and hit .375 overall.

Marriah Buss had back-to-back matches with 21 kills and averaged 4.20 kills per set to open league play against USD and SDSU ... McKenna Ruch tallied a team-high 17 total blocks (1.70 b/set) across the two matches, keeping her in first place in the Summit League with 80 total blocks ... Her 1.60 blocks per set also rank third in the nation, while her total blocks are fourth overall ... Sami Clarkson earned 57 assists and 10 digs against SDSU and remains atop the leader board with 10.88 assists per set.

Kalena VaiVai dished out a season-best 38 assists and added a career-high seven service aces in the win over Kansas City ... In the match, Vaivai sparked an 8-0 run from the service line and registered four consecutive aces during the stretch ... Sakira LaCour registered her 300th career block in the match and finished with a match-high four blocks against St. Thomas ... For the third straight match, Chloe Salcedo led ORU in digs with 12 while Kaia Dunford and Trinity Freeman downed 12 kills apiece.

Keya Luta Win Hunt tied a career-high with 16 assists in the loss to UND and recorded her third double-digit assist performance of the season against NDSU with 11 ... Lauren Galvin tallied six kills against Oral Roberts and is now 14 kills away from 500 in her Tommie career ... She and Emma Goerger, who also registered six kills against the Golden Eagles, are two blocks away from 50 as well.

Elizabeth Junke’s 28 kills and Lolo Weideman’s 19 digs were just what the Coyotes needed in a five-set thriller against Omaha ... Against Denver, Juhnke had a career-high seven blocks including two solo blocks and was credited with 30.5 points during the match ... USD’s 13-match winning streak came to an end with a 3-2 loss at North Dakota State ... In that match, Juhnke broke a Summit League record for the most kills in a match with 39, breaking Laura Milos of ORU’s record set in 2014 ... Kamryn Farris totaled a match and career-high 18 digs against the Bison, while Evelyn Diederich tallied a career-high 13 kills with just two errors to hit .393.

Down three points in the fifth and final set, SDSU rallied to defeat Omaha, 3-2, behind Crystal Burk’s 24 kills and Masa Scheierman’s 12 kills ... Burk’s 24 kills came at a .357 clip, her second best hitting percentage of the season, SDSU’s 10 service aces were the most in a single match since notching 10 at NDSU last November ... Burk registered her fifth straight double-double and 12th of the year with 16 kills and 17 digs in the victory over North Dakota and has now led the Jackrabbits in kills in all 15 matches ... Raegen Reilly dished out 43 assists and recorded 11 digs, good enough for her seventh double-double of the season.

Western Illinois won the first set, 25-16, against North Dakota, but fell by a 3-1 final ... In the match, Aubrey Putman and Elizabeth Ziegler both paced the offensive side of the ball as Putman had 15 kills to go along with Ziegler’s 10, while Putman also got it done on the defensive side, having 15 digs ... The Leathernecks won the third set, 25-19, against Kansas City and saw Karli Wenzel contributed 15 digs for the third match in a row.
