SDSU’s Dentlinger, ORU’s Abmas lead quintet on #SummitMBB All-Academic Team

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- South Dakota State’s Matt Dentlinger and Oral Roberts’ Max Abmas found their names on a familiar list Wednesday as both were once again named to the Summit League Academic All-League Men’s Basketball Team, League officials announced. Dentlinger earned his fourth career honor, while Abmas collected his third on a team that is voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives and sports information directors.

Dentlinger and Abmas were joined on the team by a trio of first-time honorees in St. Thomas graduate student Parker Bjorklund, South Dakota junior Tasos Kamateros and Denver sophomore Touko Tainoamo. The players were chosen for the honor based on their academic and athletic performances during the 2022-23 season.

A three-time College Sports Communicator Academic All-American, Dentlinger, who has an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, owns a 4.00 GPA in his pursuit of a master’s degree in electrical engineering. On the basketball floor, he earned All-League second team teams for the second time in his career after averaging 14.9 ppg and 5.8 rpg in 18 conference games.

Abmas owns a 3.80 GPA in mathematics/pre-med. Abmas won the Summit League scoring crown for the third straight year and was named the League’s Player of the Year for the second time in his career. He averaged 23.5 ppg during ORU’s 18-0 run to its first regular season title since 2011-12 and moved into second place on the League’s all-time scoring charts with 2,562.

Bjorklund owns a 3.75 GPA in digital experience was a second team All-League selection after leading the Tommies to a tie for fourth in the League standings in just their second season as a Division I program. He averaged 15.9 ppg against League opponents and had two of his three double-doubles during the Summit League Tournament.

Kamateros carries a 3.71 GPA in business administration and earned honorable mention All-League honors for the second consecutive season. He averaged 12.8 ppg and 6.2 rpg in 18 starts against League foes and also was named to the CSC All-District Academic Team.

Tainamo owns a 3.95 GPA while double majoring in mathematics and philosophy. He averaged 10.9 ppg and 6.3 rpg in 18 League starts and became the first Pioneer to land on the all-academic team since 2017-18.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of his team's competitions.
