#SUMMITWBB Weekly Notebook: No. 1

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The 2024-25 women’s basketball collegiate season officially tips off for the Summit League today at 11 a.m. CT. The season-opening week will see all nine of our members taking the court throughout the 21 games scheduled including a matchup with a top-25 nationally-ranked opponent.
 
North Dakota State and Oral Roberts are the first to take the court today. The Bison host Drake at 11 a.m. CT while the Golden Eagles will see Northeast Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. CT as well.
 
On Friday, Nov. 8, #21/20 Creighton will make the trek to Brookings, S.D., to match up against (RV/RV) South Dakota State at 6 p.m. CT.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
  • South Dakota State was picked to once again hoist the Summit League Women’s Basketball regular season trophy and Jackrabbit forward Brooklyn Meyer was named the Preseason Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season. The Jackrabbits finished the 2023-24 League season with a 16-0 record, unbeaten for the third time in four years a season ago.
  • The Jackrabbits are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today/WBCA Preseason Polls. They also checked in at No. 7 in the CollegeInsider.com’s Preseason Mid-Major Top 25.
  • Jackrabbits’ head coach Aaron Johnston was named to the watch list for the Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats.
  • Meyer, fellow Jackrabbit Paige Meyer and South Dakota’s Grace Larkins were named to the preseason watch list for the Becky Hammon Award. The award recognizes the top players in mid-major women’s basketball. SDSU was one of three schools with multiple players on the preseason watch list.
  • Brooklyn was also one of 20 players named to the 2024 Lisa Leslie Award watch list. The honor recognizes the top centers in Division I women’s basketball.
  • Brooklyn is the league’s top returning scorer and the league’s reigning Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 18.7 ppg, pulling down 7.3 rpg and leading the league in blocks (1.3/g). She ranked second and third, respectively in scoring and rebounding in Summit action.
  • Paige was an All-Summit League first team honoree last season and the reigning Summit League Women’s Basketball Championship MVP. She was second on the team with 15.2 ppg and dished out 4.0 apg while ending her junior campaign .503 from the floor and .422 from the three-point line.
  • Larkins, a 2023-24 All-Summit League first teamer, averaged 16.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 4.9 apg and 1.6 spg while shooting a career-best .471 from the field, .349 from three and .858 from the charity stripe.
  • Oral Roberts returns four 2023-24 postseason honorees to the 2024-25 roster: Emily Robinson (Freshman of the Year), Taleyah Jones (Newcomer of the Year and All-Summit League second team), Jalei Oglesby (Sixth Woman of the Year and 2nd) and Ruthie Udoumoh (2nd and All-Defensive team).
  • Other 2023-24 All-Summit League award recipients taking the court again this year include Denver’s Jordan Jones (2nd) and Emma Smith (HM), Omaha’s Grace Cave (HM), St. Thomas’ Jade Hill (2nd team) and Amber Scalia (HM) and South Dakota State’s Madison Mathiowetz (HM).
