#SummitVB Weekly Notebook No. 5

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. —  Just like that, league play is here. The opening day of Summit League volleyball action features four exciting matchups, all streaming live on the Summit League Network. South Dakota State welcomes Omaha to Brookings, Oral Roberts hosts Denver in Tulsa, Kansas City travels north to take on St. Thomas in Minnesota, and South Dakota heads to Grand Forks for a clash with North Dakota.

Denver enters league play atop the standings with an impressive 8-3 record. South Dakota State (6-3) and South Dakota (8-4) follow closely behind, while St. Thomas, winners of six of their last seven matches, hold fourth at 7-4.
North Dakota State sits in fifth at 6-4 after a strong start to the season. Omaha, coming off a stellar league performance last year with just two losses, currently holds sixth at 3-6. North Dakota (3-8), Oral Roberts (2-10), and Kansas City (1-12) round out the standings.

Around the league
• Six of the league’s nine volleyball teams picked up a win during the final week of non-conference play. 
• Denver sits atop the league standings at 8-3, the Pioneers’ best start since 2021. After winning two five-set matches during the final weekend of non-conference play, the Pioneers are now 5-1 in five-set matches this season. 
• South Dakota State’s Sylvie Zgonc reached 1,000 career kills against Boise State. The Jackrabbit junior has earned the Summit League Freshman of the Year, Summit League Player of the Year, All-Summit League first team honors twice, and was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American in her first two seasons for the Jackrabbits. 
• South Dakota’s Avery Van Hook garnered 124 assists over three matches to continue her reign atop the league standings in total assists (475) and assists per set (10.56). The Coyote junior ranks sixth in total assists in the NCAA and twelfth in the NCAA in assists per set.
• St. Thomas beat Big Ten foe Northwestern and placed Tezra Rudzitis and Anya Schmidt on the Northwestern Invitational All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Addie Schmotzer tallied her 100th career block against the Wildcats. 
• North Dakota State middle blocker Emma Tallman recorded a career-high 12 kills during the final non-conference game of the season against Southern Illinois. 
• Omaha’s Kali Jurgensmeier and Faith Venable were named to the 2025 Creighton Classic All-Tournament Team. 
• Omaha’s 38-36 fourth set loss against South Florida was the second highest scoring set in Division I volleyball this season. 
• UND’s Izzie McCormick reached the 1,000 career-dig mark against UT Martin. The Fighting Hawks picked up two wins in the final non-conference tournament of the season while placing Paige Barber and Kimanni Rugley on the Mercer Invitational All-Tournament team. 
• ORU’s Julia Carr earned a spot on the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team after producing 46 digs across three matches. The Golden Eagles picked up their first win of the season against New Mexico State. 
• Kansas City’s Alaina Larson recorded a season-high 25 digs against Saint Louis, the most from a Roo this season.
