SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – North Dakota State was selected at the top of the Summit League men’s basketball preseason poll, while South Dakota State junior Joe Sayler was tabbed as the Preseason Player of the Year, league officials announced Tuesday. The voting panel included the League’s eight head coaches, sports information directors and select media members.

South Dakota State, who is under the direction of second-year head coach Bryan Petersen, was picked to finish third. The Jackrabbits earned seven first-place votes and 396 points.

Joining Sayler and the Tommie trio on the preseason first team was Oral Roberts guard Connor Dow and Andy Stefonowicz.

Dow knocked down 81 3-pointers throughout last season, the most among returners, while averaging 13.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Stefonowicz led the League with 4.8 assists per game and was second with a 2.3 assist/turnover ratio.

The all-preseason second team was comprised of the South Dakota State duo of Jesse Van Kalsbeek and Kalen Garry along with Omaha’s Grant Stubblefield, South Dakota’s Vince Buzelis, and Kansas City’s Jaylen Smith.

Van Kalsbeek was the NAIA National Player of the year after averaging 27.8 points and 12.4 rebounds per game at Northwestern (Iowa). Smith averaged 9.1 points per game en route to SoCon Sixth Man of the Year honors. Garry was a Preseason All-Summit League First Team member in 2025-26
