#SummitWSOC Weekly Notes: Week 9 Edition

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Summit League women’s soccer enters the ninth week of the season and continues to make history after another great week of League play. This week, each institution plays two matches against teams from the opposite pod.
 
This year, the Summit League introduces a new seeding format as all eight programs are put into two different pods. Pod A is composed of North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota and South Dakota State while Pod B includes Kansas City, Omaha, Oral Roberts and St. Thomas. The Championship shall be a six-team, single-elimination tournament held over two weekends. The top three teams in each pod will automatically qualify, with the runner-up from each pod hosting the quarterfinals against the opposite pod third-place team. The semifinals and championship will be hosted by the higher overall regular season point total winner and designated No. 1 overall seed. In the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer rankings, Oral Roberts is receiving votes for the first time in program history. It is the first time a Summit League member has been part of the national rankings since 2014. The Golden Eagles are also the No. 1 team in the West Region Rankings with South Dakota State coming in at No. 8.
 
In the latest NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer RPI rankings, two Summit League programs rank within the top 130. Oral Roberts comes in at No. 96 while South Dakota State is No. 127.
 
The Summit League continues to rank highly among all NCAA Division I conferences, being third in goals allowed (109) and third in save percentage (0.777).
 
South Dakota State also holds high rankings in multiple national team statistics. The Jackrabbits are tied for second in assists per game (3.64), tied for 10th in goal differential (22), sixth in points per game (9.27), tied for eighth in goals per game (2.82), tied for third in total assists (40), 16th in total goals (31), and eighth in total points (102).
 
Individually, SDSU’s Mia Bosch is tied for 33rd in the nation in assists per game (0.55) and 30th in total assists (6). 
 
Oral Roberts is also tied for 10th in the nation in goal differential (22), tied for 15th in goals against average (0.500), tied for 27th in goals per game (2.33), tied for 21st in shutout percentage (0.583), and tied for 30th in total goals (28).
 
Individually, Cameron Silva is tied for fifth in the country with 0.67 assists per game and tied for third with three total assists. Goalkeeper Alyson Sebban is tied for 17th in goals against average (0.476) and tied for 18th in total shutouts (6). Forward Brianna Castleberry is eighth in Division I in goals per game (0.92), 15th in points per game (2.08), tied for seventh in total goals (11) and tied for eighth in total points (25).
 
North Dakota is 21st in the nation in saves per game (6.40), with goalkeeper Thale Ruether’s 5.78 saves per game ranks 27th.
 
In the first match of last week, ORU hosted St. Thomas Friday night to a 3-0 victory for the Golden Eagles’ eighth on the year and second during Summit League play. The two programs played a scoreless first half before Oral Roberts put three in the back of the net from three different student-athletes. Hannah Voskuhl started the scoring in the 62nd minute off a Brianna Castleberry corner kick for her first goal on the season. In the 77th minute, Keira Floyd also scored her first goal of the year on another Castleberry assist. This was Castleberry’s first multi-assist game of the year after leading the team in assists last year. Genesis Helsley capped the scoring in the 85th minute for her second goal of the year.
 
ORU’s defense held the Tommies to just two shots on goal and Alyson Sebban needed just one save to collect her League-leading sixth shutout of the season.
 
On Saturday, Kansas City traveled to Omaha in a clash that saw the Mavs come out victorious, 1-0. Payten Ivins scored the lone goal of the match in the 35th minute for her first goal on the season. Goalkeeper Cadence Fagan collected her fourth shutout on the season on the day while also tallying a save. Her four shutouts are tied for second in the Summit League.
 
In the other match of the night, North Dakota State hosted South Dakota State to a 0-0 draw. Neither team could get any scoring going. Both goalkeepers combined for nine saves on the night, with the Bison’s Payton Mulberry tallying six and Mallorie Benhart stacking up three. The shutout for Mulberry also was her fourth shutout of the season and brought her to 11 on her career, moving her into a tie for sixth all-time in program history. This was also Benhart’s fourth shutout this year and she ranks second in the League in goals against average (0.85) and shutouts per game (.444).
 
In the final match of the week, South Dakota earned the road victory against North Dakota with the 2-0 win. Klarissa Vega picked up both goals for the Coyotes for her first brace of the year, scoring first in the 22nd minute before rattling the back of the net again in the 58th minute. USD goalkeeper Cambell Fischer tallied five saves for her fourth shutout on the season. In the defeat, UND goalkeeper Thale Ruether picked up 10 saves and now has 52 on the season, good for second in the League.
 
League play is back in action on Thursday with four matches on the day. First up, Omaha heads north to face North Dakota. North Dakota State will then host St. Thomas and South Dakota welcomes Kansas City. To cap the night, South Dakota State hosts Oral Roberts.
 
On Sunday, with all games played at 1:00 p.m. central, Oral Roberts stays on the road to face South Dakota, South Dakota State hosts Kansas City, Omaha heads North Dakota State and North Dakota welcomes St. Thomas.
