OMA's Simon snags Kwik Star #SummitMBB weekly honor

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Omaha forward Valentino Simon collected the latest Kwik Star Summit League Men’s Basketball Peak Performer of the Week accolade, securing the first of his career, league officials announced Tuesday.  The Mavericks are the first program with three different weekly award winners this season, as Simon joined Lance Waddles (Dec. 23) and Paul Djobet (Feb. 3) in earning the honor.

Simon led the Mavericks to back-to-back wins and into fourth place in the league standings after averaging 16.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg in victories over St. Thomas and Denver.

In the 98-94 win over St. Thomas, Valentino registered a double-double with a career-high 21 points and career-high 10 rebounds. In the nine Summit League games leading up to the contest, the senior forward had combined for 14 points and 11 rebounds.

He went 6-for-7 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the foul line as he logged a season-high 32 minutes.

The Nassau, Bahamas native backed up that effort with an 11-point, six-assist and five-rebound outing in a win over Denver that pushed Omaha past the .500 mark in conference play at 7-6. He went 4-for-8 from the field to finish the week shooting 67 percent from the field. His six assists against the Pioneers were also a career-high.
