NDSU's Hicks takes first-round lead at #SummitWGF Championship

MESA, Ariz. - North Dakota State's Madi Hicks leads the individual standings after the opening round of the Summit League Women’s Golf Championship, firing off a 72 (+1) in the opening lap. Leading the team standings is South Dakota State who carded a 298 (+14) to take a two-stroke advantage over South Dakota at Longbow Golf Club.

The Jackrabbits placed three golfers inside the top seven on the individual leaderboard, led by senior McKenzie Mages, who fired a 73 (+2) to sit in a tie for second. Reese Jansa and Hannah Boraas followed closely behind, each posting rounds of 74 (+3) to give SDSU a strong start to the tournament.

NDSU’s Hicks notched two birdies through the first 18 holes to mark her as the lone golfer in the field under +2. Teammate Jeri Lafleche added a 76 (+5) to help the Bison secure a fourth-place team position at 303 (+19), just five shots off the lead. 

South Dakota is in second place at 300 (+16), powered by Eva Greenberg’s 73 (+2), which has her tied for second. Ava Schroeder contributed a 75 (+4) to place inside the top 10, while Morgan Rupp and Catie Nekola each turned in rounds of 76 (+5), sitting at tied-11th.

The defending champion, Denver, sits in third at 302 (+18) with Anna Neumayer matching the second-place score of 73 (+2). Kaitlin Zingler added a 75 (+4) to land inside the top 10, while Maren Farbu and Holly Hamilton each carded 77 (+6) to round out the Pioneers’ scoring.

Oral Roberts posted a 309 (+25) and is in fifth place after round one. Jayla Kucy led the Golden Eagles with a 73 (+2), tying for second, while Anna Swan added a 77 (+6). Kucy’s round highlighted ORU’s effort as it looks to climb the standings in the second round.

St. Thomas sits sixth at 312 (+28), paced by Kathryn VanArragon’s 75 (+4), which places her in a tie for eighth. Fellow Tommie Emma Davies followed with a 78 (+7) to place second amongst the UST team.

The Mavericks place seventh at 314 (+30), led by Jasmine Yang’s 76 (+5) to tie her for 11th, while North Dakota rounds out the standings at 328 (+44). The Fighting Hawks were paced by Gigi Lund, who posted a 78 (+9) in the opening round.

The second round of the Summit League Women’s Golf Championship will continue Monday morning as teams look to make their move up the leaderboard.
