NDSU's Winkelman, OU's Pike Named Athletes of the Month

ELMHURST, Ill. -North Dakota State basketball player Brett Winkelman (Morris, Minn.) and Oakland basketball player Jessica Pike (Clawson, Mich.) have been named The Summit League Athletes of the Month for December.

Winkelman earns the Men's Athlete of the Month honors after averaging 23.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in December. He connected on 52 percent from the field, 57 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the free throw line. The junior posted three straight double-doubles against Colorado State, Bucknell and California. He scored a career-high 39 points to go with nine rebounds in a 102-99 overtime win at Centenary, when he surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career. It was the 10th-best single-game effort in school history. He had 21 points and 14 rebounds in a first-round tournament win vs. Bucknell and followed with 17 points and 10 boards in the championship against California en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Winkelman also had 26 points and 11 rebounds in a home win over former head coach Tim Miles and Colorado State and was honored as The Summit League Player of the Week. He ranked among the nation's Top 15 scorers midway through the month (22.6 ppg) and through Jan. 3 (22.2 ppg). During the month, he also became just the 14th player in NDSU history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. On the season, Winkelman leads The Summit League in rebounding and ranks second in scoring.

Pike garners Women's Athlete of the Month accolades after averaging 16.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.3 assists per game and helping Oakland to a 5-1 record (including a 2-0 mark in Summit League play) during December. She shot 45 percent from the field and 90 percent from the free throw line during the month. Pike started the month with 20 points and four rebounds in an upset of No. 21 Florida State. She finished with 25 points and six rebounds in a win over Siena and collected 19 points in a win over Niagara en route to being named Summit League Player of the Week on Dec. 25. On the season, Pike leads Oakland and ranks second in The Summit League in scoring at 17.8 points per game. She is on pace to score her 1,000th career point this season.
