WEEKLY NOTEBOOK: Vol. 6 (March 21)

AROUND THE SUMMIT LEAGUE...

• Last year's Triple Crown winner, Spencer Henson of Oral Roberts, enters the weekend leading the league once again in all three of those categories: batting average (.403), home runs (5) and RBI (24). He went 2-for-4 for three RBI in a mid-week loss at Central Arkansas to pass teammate Hunter Wilson for the batting average lead. Henson went 5-for-10 with five RBI in the series win over Purdue Fort Wayne.
• Last week, Wilson went 9-for-12 with seven runs and five RBI in a sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne as the grad transfer from Arkansas claimed his first Summit League Hitter of the Week accolade.
• Omaha opened up league play with a sweep of North Dakota State. Senior Payton Kinney continued his early season dominance, fanning 11 Bison in eight innings of work in game two of that series. Kinney earned his second pitcher of the week honor of the season and third of his career.
• Kinney is tied for 12th nationally with a 0.58 ERA and is tied for 11th with four wins. He takes a 25-inning scoreless streak into Omaha's series with the Mastodons this weekend. The Mavericks' trio of starters allowed just two earned runs in 19.0 innings of work against Purdue Fort Wayne (0.94 ERA).
• South Dakota State won the final two games of its league-opening series at Western Illinois. Nick Smith went 3-for-8 at the plate and swiped four bases to bring his league-leading total in that category to seven. He also drew seven walks in the series.
• Bret Barnett picked up saves in each of SDSU's victories over the Leathernecks, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings whlie fanning four over the weekend. The Jacks travel to ORU for a three-game league set this weekend.
• NDSU's Peter Brookshaw has hit safely in four straight and is one of two Bison (Jack Simonsen; .303) hitting over .300 on the season.
• Western Illinois' Javin Drake leads the league in innings pitched (34.0) and strikeouts (38). The Leathernecks play host to the Bison this weekend in Macomb.
• Purdue Fort Wayne outfielder Robert Young III has three straight multi-hit games to his credit and is 8-for-16 at the plate during a four-game hitting streak that he'll take into a three-game series at Omaha this weekend.
