TULSA, Okla. – No. 2 seed South Dakota State staved off elimination with a late-inning rally to knock out No. 4 seed Western Illinois 9-5 in game three of the #SummitBSB Championship.

The first elimination game of the tournament started off well for the upset-minded Leathernecks as they moved ahead 4-0 after scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run from Deion Thompson. Their bats would cool down after that, but WIU starter Jace Warkentien kept the Jacks at bay until the seventh inning.

SDSU's Drew Beazley had driven in the only run of the game for the Jacks with a third-inning sacrifice fly before he started an eight-run onslaught spanning the seventh and eighth innings that kept their season alive. He doubled in the first of those runs and shortstop Gus Steiger added an RBI in each frame while also stealing home during the five-run eighth. Derek Hackman capped the scoring with an opposite-field, two-run double to make it a 9-4 contest.

WIU's Drew Galassi got one run back in the eighth with a solo shot to left, but that would prove to be the final run of the season for the Leathernecks.

SDSU reliever Brett Mogen tossed three innings of scoreless relief, fanning a season-high five to pick up his first win of the season. WIU's Connor Rektorski took the loss after surrendering five runs on five hits in the top of the eighth.
