Sioux Falls, S.D. -- The CU Mortgage Direct Dakota Showcase provided a little glimpse into how competitive Summit League play should be after the New Year. Each team won at least a game and all but two of the contests were decided by single digits, including a 53-52 slugfest win by North Dakota State over in-state foe North Dakota.
South Dakota's Stanley Umude capped the event with one of the single-best performances of the young college season, dropping a career-high 41 points in the Coyotes 91-78 victory over South Dakota State. The San Antonio native collected the second #SummitMBB weekly honor of his career after averaging 28.3 ppg over the course of the three games.
With a new week on tap, the competition does not get any easier for Summit League foes as a trio of Power-5 matchups loom with Omaha facing Colorado of the Pac-12, Oral Roberts set to square off against in-state foe Oklahoma of the Big XII and North Dakota State wrapping up its non-conference slate against another Big XII opponent in TCU. The Coyotes get another crack at an undefeated Drake team that is currently 6-0 and ranked No.9 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll. The Bulldogs defeated South Dakota earlier this season at the Little Apple Classic in Manhattan, Kan.

#BEATTYPE1 GAMES RETURN FOR YEAR THREE
League basketball season will mark the third consecutive that the league's nine men's and women's programs will bring awareness to type 1 diabetes. All 18 programs have once again designated a league game to team up with Sanford Health and bring awareness to the disease that more than 1.25 million Americans are currently battling.
The #BeatType1 initiative is a collaborative effort between the league's nine-member institutions and Sanford Health and administrators from each institution have toured the Sanford Health facilities during visits to Sioux Falls in the past and recorded public service announcements once again that will air at each of their respective institutions during these awareness games.
In total, there were 12 dates set aside by league members ranging from Jan. 2 to Feb. 28.

SOUTH DAKOTA’S UMUDE SECURES #SUMMITMBB PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR
South Dakota senior Stanley Umude collected #SummitMBB Player of the Week honors after a dazzling three-game stretch at the CU Mortgage Direct Dakota Showcase, league officials announced Monday.
Umude averaged 28.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg and shot 50 percent from 3-point range (10-for-20) in the three games at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, capping the event with a 41-point outburst in a 91-78 win over in-state rival South Dakota State. The 41 points were the most by a Summit League player in a game this season and tied Iowa’s Luka Garza for the most by a Division I player in a game this season.
Umude had 26 points by halftime of the SDSU contest and finished the game, making 17-of-26 shots from field. The San Antonio native also added 11 boards to register his second double-double of the season.
In USD’s opener against North Dakota, Umude put up a then season-high 30 points thanks to a 5-for-9 effort from beyond the arc against the Fighting Hawks and added 14 points, five rebounds and three assists in the Coyotes’ middle game against North Dakota State.
JACKS SHIFT TO NO. 11 IN MID-MAJOR POLL
SDSU slipped to No. 11 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll after posting a 2-1 record at the CU Mortgage Direct Dakota Showcase. The Jacks picked up wins over both Summit League programs from the Peace Garden State before falling to rival South Dakota in the finale of the three-day, three-game event.
FLURRY OF 30-POINT SCORERS
It took a couple of weeks for a Summit League player to eclipse the 30-point mark in a game, but once Oral Roberts’ Max Abmas dropped 33 on Oklahoma State on Dec. 8, the total of 30-point games reached four before last week was over. South Dakota’s Stanley Umude contributed two of those, going for 30 in a 75-71 loss to North Dakota in the opening game of the CU Mortgage Direct Dakota Showcase. He capped the event with a Summit League single-game high 41 in a win over South Dakota State on Dec. 12. Earlier that day, Justin Brookens came off the Western Illinois bench to score a career-high 37 points in a 92-88 loss at Eastern Illinois. Brookens, who was a JUCO All-American a season ago at Iowa Lakes, had scored just 22 points in the Leathernecks’ first four games.
WELCOME BACK, KANSAS CITY
After spending the previous seven seasons in the Western Athletic Conference, Kansas City is back in The Summit League once again as a full-time member. The Roos, who were previously a member from 1994-2013, will replace Purdue Fort Wayne, keeping the league’s membership at nine for the 2020-21 season.
DOUBLE-DIGITS
Earlier this Summer, Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple announced that St. Thomas would join the league as the 10th full-time member to start the 2021-22 season. The Tommies will become the first NCAA Division III member to make the leap straight to the DI level after receiving a special waiver.

Last season, more than a dozen league players eclipsed the 1,000-career point plateau. Five league players entered the 2020-21 with more than 700 career DI points and South Dakota’s Stanley Umude became the first to eclipse that milestone. Umude scored 24 points in the season-opener vs. Colorado and became the 31st player in USD history to achieve that feat.
Here’s a rundown of the current DI career scoring leaders among league players:
Stanley Umude, South Dakota | 1,123
Matt Pile, Omaha | 985
Brandon McKissic, Kansas City | 945
Kevin Obanor, Oral Roberts | 870
Rocky Kreuser, North Dakota State | 773
Grad transfer R.J. Glasper scored 1,531 career points in three seasons at Arkansas Tech (DII) before transfering to Oral Roberts to conclude his collegiate career.
CARIUS HAS IT COVERED
Western Illinois grad transfer Will Carius has covered all three divisions the NCAA has to offer and arrives in Macomb with 1,277 career points between stops at Northern Michigan (DII) and Monmouth College (DIII). Oral Roberts
